Title: 99 XJ cutting out on startup?
Post by: thorna on September 24, 2015, 05:56:10 PM
My nephew has been looking at buying a 4ltr Xj that has been standing for a long time; 8+ years!
Originally parked up as it was cutting out after start up and was deemed an immobiliser or ecu fault.
What do you all think?
Likewise worth saving or best left for parts/scrap?

I have one with similar ecu probs a diesel mind been sat now 4 years at a friends farm now. Not easy to sort believe you need same year and all the associated alarm bits, then the DRB 3 to programme to the vehicle. Someone may correct me but that's the way we tried.

Have you fitted a new battery ?
An old battery will cause that problem.
The immobilizer can be removed with out the need for a drb 3

Is it possible to see any fault codes on the dash?

diesel and petrol issues are not comparable.

if it's been standing for 8 years then the battery will be toast, new battery and the ecu will have to relearn settings, if it runs and stalls after a few settings, get it started and see if it runs longer with half throttle or fast idle. may sound ike a bag of nails but it should clear up and run smooth after a period of time

 :imwitstupid:

Petrol one will benefit massively from a new battery then starting with some throttle. It will need some throttle applied and gently eased off as it learns to idle. After so long it would pay to just check fluids first (sorry if that's obvious) and fresh fuel. It might takes a few goes and then a good bit of running and warming up to get it right but only after trying will you know if there are serious faults. A scan tool after this process would be useful.

Diesel? Who knows, probably best scrapped.

Purchase price got to be really good because you'll still need disks, pads, brake lines, tyres, body rubbers, de-cat pipe etc just to get it drivable, and then there's rusted floors and an MOT!
But don't let that put you off, 4 litre XJs are ruddy brilliant.

Having done a massive amount of research recently on Jeep XJ factory alarms, it sounds like you may have the sentry immobiliser problem.
It may be worth having a search on Naxja or cherokeetalk forums.

Try checking the immobiliser LED for fault codes. Have a read here: http://jeep-club.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=4740 (sorry for no hyperlink - on my phone)

Hope you figure it out, and yes - buy the XJ!!
