TJ 2.5 engine replacement
« on: November 28, 2014, 05:30:56 PM »

Hi All,
I have a 1998 2.5L TJ.
The engine seems very underpowered and mate has suggested that it is losing compression. Top end is never above 70mph and up any sort of incline it really struggles.
I had a YJ 2.5L previously that didnt have these sort of problems.
Yes I know I sould of bought a 4L and I'm regretting that now.
If a 4L would fit in on a straight swap I would.

Now my question is with the TJ being a 98 would I be able to fit an engine from a P reg vehicle, I have heard the coil pack is different among other things.
Any help appreciated, I'm not that mechanically minded but I have swapped an engine on an RS turbo a number of years ago so I will be able to do it.

Thanks

Ian

apart from engine mounts cooling pipework ecus etc it should be a straight swap. plus you instantly have axle gearing for large tyres

Sell said chariot and buy a man size, this is the cost effective solution.

As above Don't teven think about it.
Cheapest answer is to buy a rusted out XJ 2.5 sport...... For £400 to £500 and rob the engine.....

Nah chassis wise its just the engine mounts that are different. Steering column braket is different but bolts in the same place. rear prop is shorter. And fan cowl/bits about there are different. Can't think of anything else at the mo. Just been helping with jebbench's rebuild using his 2.5 and mocaj's parts breaker 4.0.

I'm a bit confused.
I think most of comments were for fitting a 4l in.
I'm not the best with a spanner.
A lump from a 2.5 sport XJ go straight in.
What year would it have to be as seen pre 97 engines described as non coil.
Thanks

97 onwards. The 2.5 never had coil on plug.

So any 2.5l TJ engine up to 2003 should fit it and a 2.5l xj sport also.
Guess I will have a look at prices.
