1...how suitable is a smooth plastic (or acryllic) flat surface when it comes to attaching a suction cup mount?
2...assuming a positive answer, does anyone have a a spare piece...about 6"x 8" and about 2 or 3 mm thick? Colour not important, but clear or smoked would be great.
I'm wanting to mount my satnav away from the windscreen and have a perfect position, but need to make a mounting bracket. Don't really want to hack up the lid on my old, but working stereo system if I can help it.

will check tomorrow think i have some
-
That would be most helpful mate.
Tokens of the best kind waiting.

I have some amber acrylic somewhere. Not sure of the size, I'd have to dig it out to check what's left. It's at least 3mm thick, might be 5mm I think.
-
Cheers JJ...looking at the gap I have to use, I think anything thicker than 3mm might be a problem, but appreciate your time.

Bazz the stuff i have is 5mm.
Will ask a mate of mine who works for a plastic supplier to see whats he can find
-
Just got mine out and measured it at 3.5mm. Thin enough or not?
It's clear amber in colour and you could have a piece about 6"x8" leaving me a two inch strip should I ever need it.
-
Did a really precise measure up today...thickness is important...3mm is max, but could probably deal with that using the Dremel.
6" x 6" is the smallest size I could work with...6" x 7" would be perfect.
Just to try and explain what I'm doing...it all revolves around the centre dash cup holders which, in the Golf, are mounted quite high, above the stereo/radio system and retract when not in use. A gentle push has them extend to a very handy position, almost level with the dashoard. I mucked around with some cardboard to test the fit and it will work fine for my Garmin Satnav unit...gives the unit full exposure to the windscreen, but doesn't block or interfere with the drivers view in any way. I taped the unit to my cardboard mockup today and drove around all over the place and it works fine. I just need the plastic material to make the solid mount.
I really do appreciate the offers of help to find the stuff I need. :icon_super:

That will be perfect JJ. Please PM me details for payment and postage details...padded bag jobbie maybe.
-
It'll just be a jiffy bag. Royal mail says less than £4 to Bulgaria in 3-5 working days. I'm not seeking payment for it, just call it a favour, and forward the favour on. PM your address and I'll get it posted.
-
Cheers JJ...I'll sort that tomorrow morning.
:icon_super:
PM sent.
-
Dispatched this morning.

:icon_super: :icon_super:
Thanks JJ, I'll let you know when it lands.
-
The package arrived, safe and sound, in this mornings post. Exactly what I was after. :icon_winkle:
Thank you very much JJ.

You're welcome. Better you have it than it sit here doing nothing. :023:
-
It is very much appreciated mate. This type of material is very hard to find over here, unless you want to buy it in 1 sq m sheets and even then, it has to be ordered in.
Favour ready to be paid forward if anyone needs one.

Always good when a plan comes together & folk help each other :icon_super:
-
:iagree: ...even better when it involves this forum and its members. I belong to quite a number and Birtys is the best, by far.

Well, my first attempt at paying a favour forward seems to have gone arse up!
A few days ago I received a PM from a very new member requesting me to send him some PDF stuff regarding the VM 2.5CRD...Dutch had very kindly sent me these files quite a while ago when I still had my KJ and this guy had somehow found out about it.
Long story short...when I sold my Jeep, along with a heap of new spare parts, I also provided the buyer with all the service manual PDFs and links to helpful sites...then I deleted all my Jeep stuff.
Trying to be helpful to this new guy, I messed around and searched up everything he was asking for, compiled it all and sent it off, via email as requested.
No response, no thanks....followed up yesterday, asking if he had received the info...no response! :jpshakehead:
Anyway, moving right along, Bazz is waiting to pay forward.

Some people just have no respect. Although, for all we know they could have been knocked down by a bus called Karma.
-
what a shame i do try to be a good person but do find sometimes i fail for reasons i dont understand
chin up mate you are definitely one of the good folks out there
-
Thank you for the very kind comment mate. I just try to treat people the way I like to treated...sometimes I fail miserably, but not for the want of trying.
-
Another update...the satnav mount is now in place and being put to good use. Many thanks to JJ for providing the material needed and also to bigjeepzj who went out of his way to be helpful.
Top job, guys. :icon_super: :icon_super:
Next little trick is to attend to the hardwiring, but that is being attended to, as we speak. :icon_winkle:
