2.7 wj hunting/surging on startup
« on: October 10, 2016, 04:33:17 PM »

Can anyone help me on what are the usual suspects for causing the engine to surge/hunt (wasn't sure what the correct term is) on startup?  I find that it happens primarily when starting from cold, although occasionally does it on startup if the engine is warm, and looks like it goes from about 500rpm to about 1100rpm-ish about once per second.  If I nail the accelerator it seems to stabilise it, and equally once the engine is running its fine too e.g. doesn't do it when stopping at lights or junctions.  It doesn't cause me any problems, it just annoying I wondered what things I could have a look at.  My wild guesses for what might be causing it are MAF, oxygen sensor or air in the fuel - any of them sound right?  Anything else I can look at/check?

OK some googling seems to point towards the Idle Air Control - me thinks the throttle body needs a damn good clean

That's the sort of symptoms you can get from a bad TPS on the 4.0 petrol.
