Title: Is this normal?
Post by: Brynjaminjones on November 23, 2014, 03:41:04 PM
I just had a look under the rad cap of mum's TJ, and it looks like this... Is that normal - it seems crusty rather than sludgy, the coolant looks pink, and the oil cap is fine.

How is the coolant level looking? I would clean that crap off the cap, top up the coolant, take it for a good long drive, then let it cool down completely and check the cap again.

My two bobs worth.

I wouldn't worry about that.

If you are keep an eye on levels for a fortnight or so.

Awesome, thanks guys - I thought it should be fine (it's only done 15,000 miles!) but thought I'd check.

I've cleaned it off and put it back - I might do a coolant flush soon as I think it's overdue anyway.

i wouldn't worry too about flushing the coolant, mayonaising on the radiator cap is normal especially if the car isn't used allot and only on short journeys. These journeys dont give time for the engine to fully evaporator so condensed water in the oil deposits on the cap in a white sludge.

Pull the filler cap or dip stick and have a smell, it should be nice and oily not a burnt or off smell. the colour should be clear and not a light brown.
