Does any one know a company that can remove the imobiliser from the ECU for a 1997 TJ in the UK?
Have had it done in the states....
Thanks in advance Maf
-
Think your best bet is to get a PCM from the states.
-
That was the advice that I got - mine still works, but I don't like only having one fob.
I got a PCM on eBay.co from a US seller, paid $70 + shipping (which was a ludicrous $100).
Haven't plugged it into the Jeep to test it yet. Might do it this afternoon.
-
I suspect a '96-'98 ZG PCM will run a TJ. Might be worth a try if someone has a spare lying around.

Thanks guys.... Mike what else do I need? Is there a ring reader on a TJ? On the back of the clocks it has imobiliser written on them... I guess the key fob as well?
Cheers Maf

I'm assuming you have a '97 TJ without SKIS. If so the PCM should just plug and play. No key fob required. Don't remember if they had a starter cut. If there is one, trace the wire and join it back together.
Can't guarantee this'll work, but the ZG never had anti theft enabled in the PCM, The May and Scumfield unit was piggybacked onto the Body Control harness instead, and I have had an XJ running on a ZG PCM.

Best option is a USA unit - trust me I have done this.

Hi,
Thanks, the TJ has basic black key and old style key fob, (so I think that means no SKIS?) when the system worked pressing the left key fob button made a click noise and the red light went out, about 12 months ago the TJ just started without pressing the button, didn't cut out after a few seconds, the red light stayed on through out engine running, started playing up last week after we replaced the clutch, can't think that would have changed the way it worked?
It cranks over fine, has fuel but no spark.
Would this work? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jeep-grand-Cherokee-4-0-Ecu-part-number-P56041-/151407238043?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2340931b9b
Presume I need code from the old ecu and use scan tool to put onto 'new' ecu?
Time is against myself as next event is on the 12th Oct, can't see the ecu going and coming back from the states in time.
As ever thanks again, Maf
PS ZG would be auto and my TJ is manual, no problems?

You don't need any codes, if it's going to work, it'll just plug in and go. As I say, it's just a theory, but if someone has one knocking around it's worth a try, could get you out of the sh*t. Can't say if that Ebay one is any good as it doesn't say what year it's from.

Hi. You don't send your ECU to the states, you buy a replacement ECU (PCM) from the states. There are no codes on the ECU that you need to have changed, that's all done by the immobiliser box which you're taking out of the loop. The UK ECU looks to the immobiliser for confirmation before it starts the car. The US one does not.
The US cars didn't have the same shitty immobiliser piggy backed onto their cars, so you swap your ECU with the US market one to completely remove the immobiliser functionality.
Isle Of Man, who has done this and has it running advised me to find a US ECU from a car of the same year, with the same engine and gearbox and multi plug connectors (identifiable by colour).
I now have a US spec ECU in readiness for my immobiliser to stop working as its getting a bit flakey.
It took about 7 days for my US ECU to turn up.
The Cherokee ECU that Mike suggested is a good idea too, might save some money (quite expensive shipping an ECU over from the states).

A US 97-99 TJ PCM will work, if from 98-99 it must be one that did not have SKIM enabled.
ZG PCMs would be looking for the auto transmissions and would generate trouble codes if nothing else.

Hi, I am also having problems with my immobiliser on a 98 TJ 4.0 auto, would that pcm in the ebay link work for me? what is skim and how can I tell if I have it?
-
Another alternative could be from a 1996 model XJ. These are the last of the pre facelift with a 3 plug PCM.
-
Im sure I have a zj unit lying around somewhere off an "R" reg zj which I broke last year, think there are a couple fobs and keys too but cant remember, not at home just now but will be back tomorrow so will have a look see.
-
You don't need the keys or fobs. just plug it in and try it, the worst that can happen is it won't work.

SKIM is Sentry Key Immobiliser. If you have a key with a grey rounded plastic top it has a passive immobiliser chip embedded in it. Non SKIM keys are black.
-
Weird,my 98 XJ has skim but my 98 zj hasn't :017:
-
Thanks for the info. looks like I have a skim key, can I still use the pcm from a US wrangler or another Jeep model?

That's because ZGs never had SKIS.
-
Ahh,that would explain it.
I is tick :icon_toilet:

US 97-99 TJ Non-SKIS PCM will work in your 98.
-
cant find a US TJ pcm, so I am tempted to try a zj version from the uk is there any thing I should check?
-
Fitted ECU/PCM from early GC, still no spark and therefore no start :icon_sad:junk
-
scan it for codes.
-
what would be the best /cheapest scanner to get that will read the Jeep codes?
