Hi everyone,

I am looking at getting a full Metalcloak fender system for my TJ http://www.metalcloak.com/product-p/2501.htm

My only question is, will it be legal ?

I will take the 6" extension to make sure it cover the tire, however by looking at the pictures from the website, the 6" are only at the top of the fender. At the front and back it looks like it's closer to 0.

Would that cause any issues for the MOT ?

unsure if it is MOT reg to cover the tyre or just a traffic offence if you are not. Can flexi rubber extensions be easily fitted?

I fancy some of the metalcloak stocker rockers at some point, but am put off by shipping costs. Have you found a cheapish way of shipping it over from the US?

Not yet, they charge 900$ for shipment of the full kit.

I'd rather not fit any extra bit, cause it will look flimsy. The point of getting those it to remove the arches when jeepin'

as long as there is coverage over the tyres and that rooster tails are minimal so not to cause excessive spray to the car behind. all edges have to be round so no sharp edges.

waiting now for people to quote construction an use regulations....

if this applies to every sold car as everyone thinks it does, then every XKR jag with 20" plus rims will fail straight away as these cars were type approved for sale with 17" rims

C&U requires "adequate coverage" or something like that. It doesn't go into detail other that saying some EU reg can be used instead, which I expect is what they'd pull it under. Basically when looking from the side then from vertical to angle of 30 degrees forward and 50 degrees rearward the tyre must be fully covered.

It is in no way an MoT issue.

construction and use regulations are for when a new vehicle is designed. It wasn't intended to be used to spout chapter and verse like it is now. The MOT is for that. If plod has a query they will request a re-mot or a referral to the VOSA for a specific SVA inspection which would be rare in the latter.


common sense prevails, if it looks neat and tidy and like it came from the factory then 99% of the time you will not get stopped. if it doesn't then expect a curious official to ask a question

A few years ago VOSA were stopping all the white vans going into the cargo center at work and I got pulled too. The way he was looking at the coverage of my Bestop flares I don't think he'd have let me go with the Metalcloak ones. I actually got prohibited for six whole minutes, but that was for a missing split pin on the steering linkage.
