Engine management warning light
« on: October 01, 2016, 08:54:16 AM »

This is my first post here, the engine management warning light has come on in my 2011 Jeep Compass, it's has gone off a couple of times and my local garage has reset it, but comes back on after a few miles, have tried the ignition key trick and no error code is returned only the word 'done'
It's has been noticed that when changing gear a small plume of grey black smoke comes out the exhaust. Are the two connected and I have read elsewhere it could be the oxygen sensor on the exhaust. Any info appreciated

When the garage code reads it, what codes are in there? That will be the starting point...

3 codes P2237 P0252 P0087, garage suggests last two may be caused by the first?

P2237 Jeep Possible Solution:

Excessive air inflow can be caused by a vacuum leak, a dirty sensor or, an exhaust gas recirculation valve not closing properly. If the problem is not enough fuel, the culprit may be dirty injectors or fuel filters, a weak fuel pump or a leaky fuel pressure regulator. The lean fuel mix error may be accompanied by rough idling, engine misfires, hesitation during acceleration and overall poor engine performance.

P0087 trouble code definition
P0087 is Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low, indicating a fuel system problem.
This code is similar to P0088.
What the P0087 code means

P0087 is a general OBD2 diagnostic trouble code that indicates a fault within the fuel delivery system. This code is set once the ECM has detected low fuel pressure at the fuel pressure sensor.

Low fuel pressure causes the Check Engine Light to trigger by the ECM and a failsafe mode is enacted to prevent damage until repaired.

What causes the P0087 code?

The most common cause is a clogged fuel screen or filter
A failing fuel pump
A restricted fuel line
Improperly reading fuel pressure sensor will set P0087 as well
What are the symptoms of the P087 code?

Check Engine Light illuminated on the dashboard
Vehicle may run poorly
Loss of engine power, noticed during acceleration
Engine misfire
Vehicle may stop running

P0252 code definition
Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control “A” Range/Performance (Cam/Rotor/Injector)
What the P0252 code means
P0252 is an OBD-II generic code for the injection pump fuel metering control valve circuit when the engine control module (ECM) did not receive a signal from the valve indicating movement.

What causes the P0252 code?

The engine control module (ECM) monitors the fuel injection pump metering valve position current feedback when commands to control the valve are sent to the valve from the ECM.

The ECM attempts to move the valve, and if the current is out of specifications, then it sets the code P0252 and turns on the Check Engine Light.

What are the symptoms of the P0252 code?

The Check Engine Light will be illuminated and the code is set in ECM memory as a fault.

The engine may run too lean or too rich depending on the fuel valve failed position.

The engine may have reduced engine power and rough running conditions.

Looks like from the above you may have a porous fuel line somewhere or perished seals or connections.

Same happens on the Grand WJ when the plastic fuel lines get past their sell by date.
