So its time to do some work on the jeep instead of just trying to destroy it. First on the list was new front end as I was fed up of the poor approach angle and the fact that is was twisted.
So have built new front end.
Next on the list is panhard rod mounting, new steering links and all being well 4-link rear.
-
You fabricating it all yourself again mate?

Hell yeah, can't afford these built kits!

I think this thread will be well worth following, looking forward to the build Dave :)

Cheers Rich. The idea is to be done ready for west harptree, keep thinking that i may have been overly optimistic. The feckin snow ain't helpin :banghead:

Snap! Keep the updates coming, it will help me get on.
Have you cut out the front crossmember to put the winch in at the front? I can't see the full size pics at the moment to check.
-
Got some more stuff done, and found some more things that need doing. You know how they say measure twice cut once? Well I wanted the winch to be more tucked up but think I should have had the whole lot slightly further forward, the grill overhangs in the centre.
But it's to late now as its welded on.
Took the wheels off to do the panhard mount and for a knackered wheel bearing, slightly worn knuckles where the pads sit and ball joints shot, so have stripped the axle and ordered parts.
-
Mud vented discs.
Oh and don't look to hard at the welding it's not the best, need a workshop the wind keeps blowing the gas away :banghead:
-
Donk!!! One has to ask, is that Blue Oyster Compliant ??

You mean mot? Lets hope so, its no worse than the old setup so should be ok.
-
Good work. I feel your pain with the outdoor workshop, not fun with the weather we've been having.
Is your front bumper now doing the crossmember job and did you keep the parts of it that the rad slots into?

Yeah the bumper/winch mount is now the cross member, kept the top panel that mounts the rad.
-
Got it mot'd and taxed today ready for breakout and fitted new wheels and tyres off Charliejeep, cheers.
Will continue with the rest after aquiring more parts and getting some froading done :icon_super:
-
Good work and respect for getting it done and mot'd before breakout
-
Nice one Bud :)
-
So as it worked so well at breakout and nothing broke I decided that I may as well continue trying to make it worse/better and have started on the 4-link rear. Have no reason for doing this other than why not :100:
Any pointers welcome, not saying I'll listen as its a case of put stuff where it'll fit :lol_hitting: But if you see something that is obviously wrong tell me please. Aiming to get it done for wagtail, so have around 16 days to do it.
Got the link mounts made and the axle truss, truss will have plate bolted on going to top diff pan bolts when finished.
-
nice job going coil over

I wish, no it'll just be on coils and the same shocks on new mounts. Maybe a change to something fancy if this works ok. At the minute it a build on the cheap (ish) side.
-
Ooh, good work looks good so far. It's pretty obvious but the truss to axle tube welds need to be spot on.
-
Getting there slowly, may even make it to next event with luck. :100:
Got the links on and it seems to be ok, although it won't have much uptravel as the upper links hit the floor. Full bump is around 2.5" over stock xj height, will cut floor out at later date to get more up travel.
First pic is with zg rear springs 2nd with stock xj fronts. Will have to run the zg springs until i sort sye and double cardan prop, as it is I may have to run front wheel drive on the road and fit rear prop when I get there as uj angles as set for cv prop so prop clears x-member. Expecting much viabration :lol_hitting:
Still got to finish x-member, fully weld some other bits, build shock mounts and limit straps, truss brace, sort longer brake flex hose and mount hard lines and build some sort of exhaust :banghead:
-
Got some more done today, start putting bit together tomorrow. Found some red paint :lol_hitting:
-
Looking awesome mate, looking forward to seeing it at Wagtail.

Yes x2 interested to see in the metal.

It works, will see how well at the weekend. :greggmo:

Nice work bud. :icon_super:

Stripped the diff after my slight mishap at turkey hunt, it's fooked as is the lockrite. Will just go with a rebuild to stock for the time being. Already have spare ring and pinion and carrier so just need to order spiders and clutch plates may replace the bearings as well.
-
Ouch :icon_eek:
-
err och not good
-
The picture of the bearing is for Kev, who seemed to think my diff oil was a little dirty. Well it had been in around 3years. :lol_hitting:
-
So after turkey hunt mishap, rebuilt the diff with bits I had sat around. LSD ain't brilliant but then they never are, it can stay as is for the immediate future.
Also fitted an extra pair of shocks to the back end to try and slow it down a bit. Seems better.
Have eventally got round to doing something with the rear brakes to get a handbrake for the mot. Was going to do the transit route as James is, but didn't want to mess with discs.
So have fitted some off a renault scenic with cables off a fiat stilo as the pads just fit on the zj discs. Pedal feel is good (better than the zj calipers) will see how effective handbrake is after pads have bedded in a little.
Needed 25mm wheel spacers to clear the calipers with 15" wheels.
Hopefully get mot ready for breakout now.
-
Also fitted the limit straps kindly donate by cockney boy! Cheers dude. :greggmo:
-
Sounds like you've been busy - good work. Breakout is coming soon :icon_eek:
-
Caliper brackets ain't pretty but I was fed up of grinding.

ever thought about sourcing some 16" grand cherry rims? no problem with caliper clearence with those.
your dampers appear to be at a too steep an angle to work effectively. or are they purely for articulation hence the double damper for roll control

Had a quick look for some 16" but then tyres etc, made spacers the cheaper option.
Shocks mounted like that to get them in the available space without hanging below the axle or cutting the floor. Built on a budget with what i had available. Better shocks mounted through the floor would be much better but i had 4 +3 rough country sat here hence the angle. Oh and it has good flex! With them doubled up damping rates match the front.

So time for an update......
After damage at cheapfest last year some rear tube arches were welded in place (fronts still to do) with clearance for bigger tyres accounted for.
Aquired some 2.5 petrol axles of facebook so those were fitted (wish i'd done this before the 4-link) along with the new front springs i'd got hold of (gumbo/James H)
New front springs made it alot higher than expected causing me to rethink the stay short arm option. Built a radious arm set up before realising that rod ends don't work as a radious arm set up so it's now 3-linked as intended (serves me right for trying to take a short cut)
Some 33"s borrowed of James (i like to lie in a bog) Bench (off mocajs parts truck) and it works.
Tested yesterday at silverdale, first impressions are ride is much smoother and it climbs out of ruts better with less aggresive tyres on.
Damage is a rear shock mount(my bad shit weld) Panhard rod mount needed bracing(already new this was needed) and the front prop was unhappy with its new working angle.
-
And thanks to James H for sending back the wheel spacers after a wheel nut shearing incident. (shit jeep wheel nuts) Apologies for the hassle. Owe you a beer!
-
Looking good, you going to Avon Dassett on Sunday?
-
Top work and don't worry about a beer, I'm brewing a couple of barrels of cider for Cheapfest :icon_pidu:

Looking tough and ready for action, good work
