Title: Any Ideas?
Post by: MK1 on September 03, 2005, 05:20:53 PM
Since the CJ has been back on the road shes been playing up.

At about 1/2 throttle she starts to 'pop back' through the carb (32/36 dgev weber, rebuilt in Feb). Once the second barrel comes in it gets a lot worse.

I have checked the obvious, plugs, timing, inlet bolts, choke operation, throttle pump etc. and all is ok.

Spoke to an engine tuner today and he reckons it's a valve train problem and a vacuum test would confirm it.

She was OK before being laid up for a couple of months so, any ideas???

hmmmm........

I know this might sound silly but have you checked your fuel filter????

Last winter my CJ started to exhibit similar sounding problems... on the motorway it'd be fine at a constant speed (obviously keeping the fuel at a constant pressure) but as soon as I needed a bit more juice (hills, overtaking (yes, really!)) all hell would break loose!

It got to the point that driving up the hill toward Strensham services (M5 north bound ) I though it was going to give out (typically in the middle of winter at about 5:30 in morning!)...I managed to get to the services.... pulled the fuel filter off and banged out a LOT of crap that was obviously caught in it!!!! (from running  the CJ out of juice earlier that year I guess.....)

Once I'd done this I went on my merry way with no problems at all!!!!!!!

Give it a check........ when it first started playing up I didn't think it was the fuel filter and suspected timing problems etc......
