Title: Shimano thumb shifters
Post by: chrisjones on September 05, 2005, 11:10:09 AM
Popped into a bike shop at the weekend and finally found a friction shimano shifter.  They're like hen's teeth!!! 8)

Now has anyone got one fitted in an XJ???  and if so where did ya put it (on the gear stick?) and how did you route the cable through to the throttle body??

Oh..... and for all of you scrathin' your heads.........hand throttle for £6.99!!!!

always wondered why you would need a hand throttle........maybe you could enlighten me as to when you would use it, my pink jeep drivin buddy??? is it in case you lose the use of one of yer feet???

Ever driven a TJ KD?, when you do you'll know why you'd want a hand throttle !

Im with KD, whats it all about Chris? Hand throtle for your motor? From a bike shop? Hope it colour coded for your unique colourd car mate! :D

Owen, your motor probably did have a hand throttle...but its fallen off  :butthead:

Hand throttles are normally used for applications that draw lots of juice from the engine....ie winching.

Also used on power take off applications.

Common place in ex MOD landies, used for all the radio gear.  Used in convoy as cruise control........

Oh right gotcha! I know exactly what you mean now! Guess Chris must have fitted a nice neon kit to bring out that rich colour in the dark!
Pinkish by day, shocking pink by night with hand throtle boosting the neons :rotflmao:  :rotflmao:

Quite right Ric - but in a Jeep, especially a 4 litre TJ, the throttle is so responsive that with the bouncing about when offroad combined with the lower gearing your foot tends to 'judder' the throttle resulting in a 'leapfroging' action, using a hand throttle smooths all that out...dont know why you'd want one in an XJ though, they never go 'proper' off roading...ducks to avoid missile

You'll have to duck lower than that!!!!

Thought I'd give it a go and see if it made things any easier.  If it don't I've lost £7 so no big deal!  :D

Whilst on the subject of add ons Chris, why not ask KD for some 180deg hinges to aid getting in and out...an extra cost option of course, along with the drawer bottoms and handles  :finga:

Post by: Anonymous on September 05, 2005, 01:09:07 PM
I heard the easiest way in a TJ was to fit a second spring on the throttle. Not done it myself but I am still young and can control my Limbs :)

Best way i found in the TJ is to just pick the gear for the speed you want, then let the engine management run it and you cover the brakes and clutch if you need it.... :) sometimes over-revs but it's got me through all sorts of stuff where you need three feet...

Only pulling your pud Chris

But for what purpose are you putting the throtle thing on?
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on September 05, 2005, 01:13:24 PM
Coz it was cheap and didn't involve a remortgage at MDG / SOR / FTE etc

What Matt said!

Plus I can see if it makes bumpy/rough climbs any easier, It'll be bloody handy when I'm jump startin' the dump truck at work AGAIN!!  I might be able to work out a way of using the truck as a big genny to provide a 110v power source AND I can leave me lights on all night if I ever decide to go doggin'!!!!

Put it on the gearstick, but low enough you can't catch it accidentally..... Failing that, disconnect it when you are not using it...

The hand throttle on my CJ is on the gearstick just below the knob!!!!

Useful for keeping it steady on the bumpy bits, Doing hill starts when you have a foot operated parking brake and driving home when your accellerator pedal arm has broken (takes co-ordination but possible! I know!!!!)

Guy's Wrangler at JeepFest ended up on its side in the lake coz of the hand throttle.  Glasses fell on the floor and so he bent down to pick them up, as he came back up his arm nudged the hand throttle and he accelerated up a bank and rolled.  His kids were in the back, fortunately they were all ok if a bit damp

if you wanted one the only safe place and reason for having one is under the bonnet to use as an aid to winching idea then is you open bonnet [an old jeepers trick to keep ocupants safe if cable broke [before plasma] and then use hand throtle to lift revs for winching but like i say i just dont like the idea
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on September 07, 2005, 08:38:04 AM
But if you were really clever you could setup a tiny "Shit, can't remember what they're called, but those electrically controlled motorised hydrolic jobby, you'll get the idea"

Wire it up to the winch output so that as you use the winch, it pushes the throttle up a bit to assist... Wouldn't be as good but would help... Saying that, it'd probably cost as much as a second battery :)

Actuator??? damn, I am getting old.... (34 so god help you lot :) )

Yep, googled for an actuator.... that's what I was looking for....

Post by: Anonymous on September 07, 2005, 10:54:01 AM
Sorry to hear about Guy's accident and glad no one was hurt...but, I dont think you should condem hand throttles based on that, he could just have just as  easily put his foot on the throttle and caused the same accident. I drove my previous TJ around Marquenteere in France pretty much entirely on the hand throttle and had no problems whatsoever - its all about commonsence !
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on September 07, 2005, 10:59:57 AM
Whats commonsense?
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on September 07, 2005, 11:04:44 AM
exhibiting native good judgment; "arrive home at a reasonable hour"; "commonsense scholarship on the foibles of a genius"; "unlearned and commonsensical countryfolk were capable of solving problems that beset the more sophisticated"

Obvious aint it ?
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on September 07, 2005, 11:14:18 AM
But if we had commonsense, then we wouldn't have bought gas guzzling 4x4's that ruin the planet, kill babies and probably caused the iraq war as well if you believe the anti's :)

Fit a second spring to the throttle return....

I'm a flash Git, got me one of these (http://http://www.rockcrawler.com/techreports/orethrottle/)

Works great. Turn it on, set the rpm, and leave it there. Great for winching, jump starting dead vehicles, etc.

I don't use it for driving though. One benefit of being a left hooker is that i can stuff my foot into the transmission tunnel, reducing bounce.

Errr.......back to the thumb shifters.......

I think Matts avatar shows what could happen if a hand throttle went wrong, or got knocked on by mistake.

If ya going to have one, put it where it can't be operated by accident 8)  :smt025
Title:
Post by: horobi on September 07, 2005, 04:00:52 PM
hmmm........ being in possesion of a thumb throttle.... I can see potential problems but no more so that a wet or muddy boot sliding onto the wrong pedal at the wrong time!

The other thing is that mine is set up to have a lot of travel (as they should be) i'd have to knock it up and over through over 180 degrees to cause a problem and that just isn't gonna happen and it's also spring loaded it's not as if there is no resistance.....

my CJ had it fitted when I got it and I probably wouldn't have chosen to fit one myself but it does come in handy........

Title:
Post by: Anonymous on September 07, 2005, 04:05:34 PM
Just another thought, the Paj comes with one as standard. Who remembers the old "choke" twist to hold cables.... it's done with one of them.... I'm sure you could get one of them easily from a breakers... it's always in unless you are using it, and to make it lock on, you have to pull then twist....

hmmmm..... not just a pretty face that Ed.....  :smt118

With all this talk about safety I was also thinkin about some kinda sysem where by the throttle would 'snap' back if pushed beyond a couple o thousand revs.... some kinda rachety cammy release type affair.....

or maybe I should just keep quiet.....

Note of caution:

Mate of mine knocked hand throttle at a somewhat inopportune moment while going through the lake at Jfest. Ended up rolling over into the lake!
Title:
Post by: horobi on September 07, 2005, 06:10:44 PM
hmmm...... I think caution is ALWAYS important and obviously a hand throttle should be treated accordingly....

I'm sure that the person in the above example had larger tyres and a lift which would rasied the Jeeps centre of gravity sufficiently enough to warrant a fair degree of caution but I can't remember hearing anyone saying no-one should lift their Jeeps or put larger tyres on them.....

From a shunt in a car park to Jenson Button twatting the wall at Monaco at 170 miles an hour reducing DRIVER ERROR is what needs working on 99% of the time........

Each to there own though.....

never found my hand throttle to be a problem

my lever runs along in line with the gear stick when no revs are on
never catch it or even come close

also depends what side gear lever you have and what side you fit it
to the gear stick, mine is fitted on the passenger side of the gear lever and you click it towards the back of the jeep to put more revs on

do all the people having problems have the lever sticking out anything upto 90degrees to the gear lever, making it easier to catch and put the revs on ??? needing the lever to be moved towards the front of the jeep and up to put the revs on ? making it easier to catch by accident

Heres a few links on the Hand throttle Install
http://www.links4jeeps.com/search.php?w ... 20throttle (http://www.links4jeeps.com/search.php?whichtype=all&filled=1&search=hand%20throttle)

I use my hand throttle for climbing when I need 3 feet or when Im going to stall out I can flip the hand throttle up a bit and maintain idle with out killing it.

I highly, highly, highly advice that you loosen the hand throttle so that when you let go the spring from the throttle body forces the RPM down on the hand throttle so you dont accidently hit the throttle with your hand and have an out of control run.

Now if you need to lock the throttle down for say winching. Make sure you have the U shapped clip on the side of the hand throttle so you can tighten the shifter for that time you feel you have to lock it into posistion for winching or jump starting somebody else.

Its my favorite mod of all of them. Ok, its not better than my Tummy Tuck, but hey for a few bucks its great.
