Title: 1996 zj autobox problem...slipping?
Post by: vinyljunkie72 on August 09, 2009, 07:06:17 PM
how you all doin.
my '96 grand cherry seems to be hunting for gear on aceleration,
its always been a bit jerky when changing up threw the first couple of gears, but when stuck in traffic today i noticed that around 15 mph it started to kinda'kangeroo' as if the power was coming in bursts, then pulling away it seemed to be hunting for a gear and jerking all around the pace until around 20 and then its smooth as a fool.
now i had this box replaced a couple of years ago, so before i whip it out and bung a replacement in, i wondered if it could be something else? i've heard talk of torque convertors or maybe taking out the front prop to eliminate the viscous..could either of these be the problem?

many thanks

My VC is shot and i have the same problem, its goes flat sometimes when i pull away then suddenly finds a gear and goes fine

so anyway i was thinking 'maybe resistance from the front propshaft through the vc is causing the box to hunt at 15 mph'. long shot i know but you never know...well the front driveshaft is history now and im not quite sure its cured it,but it does seem to be a little improved.... will drive for a few days and let you know, it does make me cherry feel different to drive though, not too sure i like it yet....
if this doesnt do the trick, this w/e i'll drain the box and re-torque the low band and kickdown then change the filters...see how that goes.

ok chenged filters and fluid, retorqued the bands, tps is reading 3.9 on the center wire,so thats in range i think, and the bleeding thing is STILL slipping from 1st to second, agggh.
only thing i can think of is the speed sensor, or just swap the whole bloody thing out, but how hard, exactly, is swappind a 4.0l auto box out? can it be done on your drive? or do i need specialist junk to do it due to the weight??
