OK got TJ back from garage...one issue was starter motor...this is the second time its needed work..this time it was terminal....
Mate mentioned early Landys had some form of protection....
Me thinking initially an engine skid plate but worried about heat build up
Thoughts please cos I is a fukwit...

Don't know if relevant or what but three of us at Tong Jeepeyfest rogered our starter motors in the same deep mud pit, prob seems to be if you stop in the mud which was deep enough to come through the right side door opening (36" or hip high) the motor will compact with mud.... fixed mine with 4lb BFH the other Jeeps were not as lucky starter motor and alternator had to be replaced and the third Jeep had clutch issue.
Only thing I can suggest is removal of starter motor after serious mud... and wash and lube.... Don't know if that has been your prob?

i would try and seal the bellhousing very fine silty mud is the enemy

It seems that YJs and TJs (dont know about CJs) have the two segments at the bottom of the bellhousing between the bottom 3 bolts that look to be a deliberate gap of about 3 mm. Don't know why or what its for..... drainage!!!!! pressure release... planned obsalescence of your clutch starter motor etc!!!!!
I agree needs to be sealed... how is the next question... apart from RTVsilicone gasket or some'at.

there is also a vent widow in tj yj for some reason cast in to the bell housing [must have been the landy owner that worked on the design team]

Just do this on a regular basis and your starter is Fine Stewart :hysterical:

Hmmmmm..... Tong and starter motors/alternators! Seems to be a common issue. I was at Tong the week before the Jeepey extravaganza and my visit resulted in an alt rebuild (rebuild write-up here) (http://www.birtydastards.com/frm/index.php?topic=10692.0) and a little while later a starter clean out. I followed Rolands starter stripdown to give me a clue before I dived in. One possible problem that can occur during starter clean out is that 1 or both of the thin, long bolts that hold everything together can snap (ask me how I know :icon_rolleyes:). I managed to get round this by using a spare starter I had and mixing the best bits from both units. Basicaly I ended up with the spare starter fitted with my solenoid so I could keep the same plug in terminals.
