Title: KJ Speedo gave up
Post by: momos on August 17, 2009, 10:25:55 PM
Howdees

doing about 65 down m6 today when speedo shoots up to 120 than to 0, then faffs about inbetween then gives up completley.
when I came off, the abs came on and handbrake light, which wasn't on
I called the RAC who noticed a wire was in the wrong way and had rubbed on the wheel so he taped it up but reckons it needs a new speedo cable....
doesn't make much sense to me...he said car was safe to drive, but i don't know how fast i'm going
is this going to be another expensive one..... after i buy baby stuff grrrrr
 :icon_redface:

thanks!

for a short term fix, most sat navs can display speed, it doesnt react as quick as a speedo but will let you know if your speeding

The speed sensor is in the rear diff so is unlikeley to be rubbing on a wheel.

I will take a picture of the patch up he did on the abs wire on the front, he reconed that because that had gone through it tripped/shorted the dash... also handbrake light permanently on.
pics to follow
thanks

sure its not a brake wear sensor (dunno if KJs ave em) but cut wire on front hub and a brake warning light sorta point to it

no m8, really pissed off
no-one has a diagnostic, ones that do want want upto 50quid to 'look at it'
skint and now cheapfest is looking iffy

the cable was the abs, and handbrake combined, must have gone right thru caus lights still on after battery disconect.
brickwalls!

aparently mechanically its fine......just no speed....but surley i'm right to be cautious driving it?

If the wire to the ABS sensor is damged you will need a new sensor, this would account for the red brake failure light and ABS light being on. It's a bit odd that the speedo doesn't work, though as it works off the rear sensor in the diff (which is a common failure) so you could have 2 faults. It's perfectly safe to drive, though, although remember you have no ABS if the warning light is on.

1 hour to change the parts and 7 hours to drink tea. And you can get those parts from the USA for $120 delivered.

noooooo.... they are over an hour an away so i stay and watch them on cctv  :icon_winkle: and read mags.
to be honest, there is nowhere else round here, i've been shafted by others,so if it means taking it to somewhere i trust then i'll have to deal with it
i know its dearer, but its no good having a jeep if it cant be fixed/serviced or repaired.
even the rac guy made it worse by taping all 4 wires together another f'kin botch.
does no-one now how to fix these effin things
i hardly have anything left to sell
harumf

ooo shooting stars is on!!! :)

falling out with Funbus

new ABS, transmission and engine speed sensor, still no speedo and ABS light is still on.
I've asked them to keep my old parts and don't have to pay till next time I go over (£230ish in total), when we do they will take it to dealer to plug in ABS diagnostic to turn off light and speedo should work again.
We shall see.
Lostkj's is down so can't check
grumble

Oh dear friend Funbus
I am so sorry and stupid

The knocking noise has been sorted albeit by us.....but it wasn't the jeep
jacked it up both sides to find off wheel hanging on by very loose nuts

what a fookin doofus
now i have to cancel another garage appointment   :icon_redface:     :icon_redface:

Had the same a few years ago. Was driving up the M6. Pulled off at J13 'cus
of a knocking noise from the back end that was speed related. The doofus
who put a new tyre on for me the weekend previous hadn't tightened the nuts
properly. Could have been fun at 70mph. Premature wheel loss is common on
Capris, but this wasn't one.

Never had wheel loss on either of my Capris...
