Latest thing to come to light on the recently aquired xj is that sometimes it will judder when pulling away, both in 2 & 4wd .. not always but often .. any suggestions what I might have to throw money at? .. please be gentle, suffering from financial paralysis here!

If it was a manual, I'd say clutch.
I'm not helping much am I!! :?
-
Is it stock or lifted?
-
Check your engine mounts......
-
Does it still do it if you 'gas' it a bit harder when accelerating?
-
If it has a Trac-Loc Lsd and it judders briefly when pulling away at junctions, usually when hot, it's caused by the clutch packs and gears in the diff chattering.
Sometimes fresh oil with the Mopar Lsd additive will do the trick. £ :)
If not replacing the clutch discs in the diff usually cures it at least for a while. £££

Love the use of Emotes Mike

Thank you very much for the responses guys :)
Its a bog standard 4.0, done 40k and by the look of it never been over anything rougher then a cats eye in its life
What you describe is spot on Dr.Mike, brief juddering, worse when hot, so hopefully a change of diff oil/additive will do the trick as surely there cant be that much wear with so little mileage? (although I suspect its done a bit of towing in its life) and its got plenty of MD stamps in the service book so I assume the diff oil has been changed when it should have been .. only one way to find out .. fingers crossed!
Thanks again!

chage the oil then do it again in a few weeks and bingo probly ok
-
Try this first.... but print this out so that if you get asked by the coppers you can show them we told you :)
Find a big open car park and drive "Figure of eights" in there as if the LSD isn't used, the additive can separate and doing this caused the LSD to "Slip" thus re-mixing the additive..... Be prepared for the strange looks though...

Axle oilo changes are every 30 000 miles or 2 years, so yours was probably last done at the 30 000 mile service.
If you change the oil, do the figure of eight thing to distribute the fresh lubricant around the clutch discs properly.
