HI guys , please excuse me now if this is either stupid or blatantly obvious but I have a rattle that is driving me nuts My 97 facelift 4l xj hasdeveloped a rattle ,it sounds like it is under the truck around the front seat area , and it kinda sounds like a heat sheild kind of tinny rattle , it doesn't go with the revs and gear changes but is only there when the car is in gear and moving , cant get it to rattle & be identified when back wheels are off the ground . Also rattles in 2 and 4 wheel drive .Any thoughts cos my radio won't go up loud enough cheers cully

get under it and thump the cat [exhaust silencer] sounds like the catalist breaking up inside to me its not uncommon if it is dont worry till you need a new mot but yes its a bit of a pain

Whilst agreeing with Bubba its also worth looking for a long leathery thing with fangs as well...ya never know... :hysterical:

I'm with Bubba as this happened to our TJ but also check the back box on you XJ.
The baffles broke up on my XJ, give it a thump, you'll know if it is this. If you buy a new one keep the receipt, the replacement on mine went the same way, as did its replacement. All replaced with the 2 year guaranetee :icon_winkle:

Now theres a funny thing..... I have a 97 xj a 2.5 turbo diesal in fact , and i too have the same rattle you speak of....My days as a Landrover owner taught me that you should only worry when the rattle stops.....it means the loose bit has gone and dropped off....!

your oil burner has no cat fitted.

Thats right....i suspect in my case it may be the silencer baffles falling to bits......driving every day on Polish roads might have a lot to do with it....!
