Title: Jeep Cherokee Grand Laredo 4.0l 1997 Pinion Mate Gear broken
Post by: timtap on August 24, 2009, 06:07:45 PM
I took the cover off the Diff and found bits if Pinion Mate Gear in the bottom of the casement and on inspection have found two teeth missing on one of the gears . I was aware of a serious Clunk whilst turning corners and was advised that the LSD shims were the likely cause however whilst raising the rear wheel whilst in Neutral found that I can exhert pressure on the rear wheel and turn it.
Can any of the jeep gods give me an idea as to why  the teeth are broken and if I replace both pinion gears will this be enough to trust it all to be ok again or are there other more serious matters to consider.

          Thankyou in advance

GC rear diffs do tend to self distruct....those with mechanical abilities will be along soon...

Nobody came along to give advice and considering there is a so-called credit crunch I could'nt find a single garage to take the job on so I had to do it myself.    8 hours later, without a workshop and miserable weather I managed to fit a new set of Pinion gears and LSD shims.
Here's a couple of pics of the old ones !!!!
