Title: Turbo EGR Noisy & Leak 96 Mk1 XJ TD pre-facelift
Post by: mattyspr on October 11, 2009, 02:25:05 PM
Hi all

Anyone local to Wolverhampton that could help me???

1996 P reg XJ Mk1 2.5TD Limited pre-facelift

I have had the vehicle just over 2 months now and all was well until last week.

Turbo now really noisy when it kicks in. I suspect gasket failure somewhere. I have lots of oil sprayed around the EGR valve and the housing above it that the intercooler pipe attaches to. I removed the intercooler hose and it contains oil. Dont know how long its been in there.

Question.... should the intercooler pipes and EGR valve have oil in them?

I noticed this housing above the EGR valve had seeps of oil coming from out the gasket. Removed the 4 allen bolts from the housing. 2 of them where only finger tight. Upon removal, looks like previous owner over zelous with spanner and stripped the threads in the manifold bit it attaches too. This could be where leak is from.

I am thinking of stripping off the manifold, turbo and intercooler pipes. Cleaning them all thoroughly and refitting Turbo complete with all new gaskets. The prob I have is the possible stripped threads in the manifold that the housing above the EGR valve attaches to. Is there anyone local to me in WOlverhampton that could re-tap these for me and supply me with new bolts? Or is it just worth getting a new manifold from a breakers..... Or am I barking up the wrong tree....

Cheers all....

Hi there,it would be easier to helicoil the threads as removing the manifolds is very awkward not as easy as it would appear!!
If you do decide to remove the turbo, remove it complete with the manifold and down pipe section, with a bit of a sruggle it will come out.
btw my intercooler hoses always have oil in them,as do most turbo diesels,i just clean mine out every now and again.

Thanks for that. Looking at helicoiling this weekend. only concern is the lack of access for drilling the manifold. Dont think I can get drill in to helicoil. So it looks like a strip down I'm afraid.

Ta for the info on oil in the pipes. I dont think I'll go as far as removing Turbo. I'll replace the EGR gaskets helicoil, refit then see if it runs ok. I'll give the intercooler pipes a clean out too.

Cheers all
