Post by: loz on November 22, 2009, 06:39:30 PM
Is there anyone who sells adjustable trackbars for cherokee xj in the uk? Or do i have to import one from the states.
Unless someone has a used one they want to sell.

A few people on here have fabricated one from the original....The only person in USA I know has one for RHD is Clayton.

Mark at MDG is also a possibility....

if you have the skills make one yourself.  chop the fixed uj off the origional track bar. get a steering control bar and chop the adjustment part off just down by the link joint. weld that to the chopped track bar and you have it adjustable. I drilled and tapped the joint for a 10mm bolt for added strength

Sounds like a idea. I need to move the axle over about 1 inch or so. Deffo need to get it sorted.

This is what I did to mine both front and rear. They have worked perfectly since the modification.

i'd post a picture of mine but it's been a bit dark, i'll try tomorrow

UPDATED

you will need the pitman TRE and the adjustable connection part of the steering control arm

(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi39.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe198%2FDaveP69%2Fjeep%2Fpitmanarm2.jpg&hash=51a88e791c50eb68b792ad2635434bb0bac353cd)
chop the steering arm just to the right of the other steering arm connection, cut as close to the flattened part as possible as this will give you more bar to play with

(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi39.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe198%2FDaveP69%2Fjeep%2Ftrackbar1.jpg&hash=6c04be2ec4610f88a71ba2f655470a166866f0f9)
this shows the track bar modified and the body connection, uj fails just replace it with another ball joint from the steering

this shows the connection to the track rod.  the joint can just be seen about 1" inboard of the right hand side of the sump. althread holding the two parts together then welded. Align the adjustable joint so that it is in the middle of it's travel then offer it up to the track bar and mark where to cut. check this a few times before cutting the track bar.

i used a 10 or 12mm bolt with the head cut off. with the two parts screwed together, the joint was then cut with an angle grinder to give a good "key" for a decent weld

Using the track rod end looks like the easiest idea. Cheers for the pics.

i had a spare jeep for saprres and looked at an adjustable track bar. the off the shelf type were just too expensive for what they were and mainly consisted of a rose joint end, which was easily adjustable when fitted to the jeep. I then thought since the steering adjuster takes a fair amount of knocks especially when off road then it should be suitable to fit as an adjuster for a track bar. So with some spare parts of the spare jeep i hacked and joined the two parts together. Now fully fitted it gives an easy adjustment without removal to get the axle centralised on the jeep. The cost for doing it was a couple of beers for the welding and the cost for the track bar and steering arm.
