Title: 3 mystery gearbox identity quiz - brains over here please!
Post by: Bulldog67 on December 08, 2009, 12:09:50 PM
So, I have 3 gearboxes, one that was ataached to a 360 that I picked up for a song off fleabay, one that was attached to the 401 (less of a song), and then one off mossy, what I need to know is what are each of the gearbox? Also, is the one off the 360 a 2wd or 4wd version?

Here is the pic of mossy box (still has the transfer box attached):

Mossys tranny is the correct TH400 with BW1339 Quadratrac T/C and low range reduction unit.

The third box looks like another TH400 with the T/C and factory T/C adaptor robbed off it.

The middle box (360 box) looks like its got four mounting bolts for the torque converted to flex plate which is making me think it's a Chrysler

I got a 727 and a 999 here somewhere but their a bit errr.....  :017: buried at present, I'll have a dig through today and get some photos

I just had a think about it, I think the bolt holes on the 999 torque converter are closer together than the 727

Measure 'em up and I tell ya which box it is

the mystery box is a 999 torque flight the rear bolt pattern is for a dana 300 transfer the other two are 400s one missing its quadratrac tansfer and adapter the other being complete including low range unit

in my veiw the mystery box came from a cj

nice one gents  :icon_super:  knew it would easily solved by those with brains  :003:

so, next question, is the 999 any good?

or would u keep mossy box for the spare 360?

and if the 999 was up for sale, wot sorta ballpark figure we lookin at?

the other one by the way has all the transfer stuff, its off the 401, and the other bits are sittin under one of those sheets

and do u kno anyone with one of those  :003: ?

can u fill my head with some tech stuff please and tell me why  :023:

cos you get to fit a dana 300 that is heaps better than the quadratrac transfer only real snag is you offset rear axle

so, do u have one?

and will it fit onto the 401?

coz i have a spare rear axle that isnt offset  :003:

and if u got the time, more tech info for me please, why wont the 300 fit the 401? will it fit if I couple it with the 401 & 999 & 300? Curious as its on a 360, which I thought was basically the same as the 401

TF999 will bolt straight upto the 401 you'll need the 999 type flexplate off the 360 motor.

Best auto option for a V8 CJ really, no Quadratrac to stretch chains and eat limited slip clutch packs.

I talked to a transmission specialist on the IFSJA forum at some length about auto boxes.

Apparently both the GM Th400 and Chrysler Tf727 can handle over 1,000 BHP in competion applications.

The Tf999 is good for about 2/3 of that.

Your 401 makes 215 BHP and wont bother it, even for off road use.

Of course it may need a total rebuild and a new torque converter.

Get quotes from the UK then search the online in the U.S. mega bucks difference in prices :icon_eek:

Right, with the flexi plate off the 360, the 999 and the 300 will fit the 401, I have a CJ rear axle that is centre diff, but will need props

the decision now is which way to go, as above or stick to q/tech?  :017:

its probably a banker that whichever way i choose will no doubt be the wrong decision and will cause me even more time off the road  :011:

You got the complete powertrain for a CJ7 Quadratrac???

ie Auto radiator/Flexplate/Torque converter/Auto box/Quadratrac unit/Low range unit/Front axle/Rear axle/ Propshafts.

I think you gotta look at which lends itself best to that 4" lift kit you're fitting.

999/dana300 is shorter but rear output is higher up.

Q/T longer but rear output lower so prop run flatter.

No matter how much time you spend posting on here, I reckon it will come down to playing giant mechano sets with all the bits you got.

Be prepared to do some fabrication as required to lower the transmission mount in order to get acceptable drive angles

Yup, and having taken some monumental guidance, im gonna go short term q/tech etc so i can actually move quicker in gettin it back on the road as i know thats all there, whilst takin a not too much longer time view that the 999/300 option is the way to go long term so will just get all that in place, make sure box is ok etc and then will swap over

and what led me to this post in the first place was in part floggin one of the boxes, so mossy th400 can get its arse back on fleabay  :003:

:003: if thats there to enjoy me fabricatin dood u better get another bag in, it may be a while  :003:

Cheers dood, thort so. Means i have two then. One for the 7 & one spare i suppose.

Is tbere any value in putting it in the Chief with.a D300 transfer? Or is it pointless? Or a mechanical nitemare?
