Title: Mitsu J26 Jeep gearbox rebuild help
Post by: Invicta on February 24, 2010, 12:00:48 PM
Having found another owner of a J26 in japan who can read & write basic englich - tons better than my Japanese - I have found that my 4 speed gearbox is a M140.
These are modified 3 speed T90 units on the Willys CJ3B.
Splines = 10, Teeth = 29.

The problem I've got is it's often difficult getting 1st and 2nd gear (also the Warn OD tends to jump out of direct into neutral but I guess thats another kettle of fish).

The chap in Japan is offering to send me a parts list, diagrams and if the parts needed are small ones then parts too.

However, do you helpful folk know of anyone within striking distance of Tewkesbury who can look at the problem, tell me what's causing it and, on the basis that parts are obtainable, rebuild the box for me?
I'll pay the going rate for the work involved for both diagnosis and rebuild.

As I use my Jeep daily this is something that I'm going to get done this year rather than next month as I can work with the problem by shuffling between 4 speed and OD gears when the problem occurs.
e.g. pulling away in 3rd with Direct engaged when 1st and 2nd refuse to play ball  :icon_eek:.

All help will be very much appreciated,
Bernard

Jeeparts
I guess this is the folks at Shrewsbury.
A bit of a trek for me at the moment but I've made a note of it - I got my 16" rims from them.

Latest news.
I've got the KM141 box - this is the column change unit.
KM140 = floor change.
A chap in USA has told me that the KM145 box from a 2.6 Shogun "should" fit but I'll need to cut a hole in the floor to take the stick and maybe make a few mounting changes.

The guy in Japan has sent me the parts lists and diagrams.

Bubba,
You are probably right but as nearly all the spanner monkeys round here couldn't find their bums with both hands then there might well be "a bit of an issue".
e.g. Last week the Jeep went in for a new lead to the Dizzy, the carb to be cleaned as the float had started to stick and some work on the rear lights.
I go on holiday to lanzarote and phone the garage for an update - all is OK.
I get back - first day on way to a job one of the rear indicators stopped working - bad earth.
Today comming back from another job twice I had to tap the carb with my Axe (I didn't have a hammer) as the float stuck while I'm on hilly roads in The Cotswolds (and yes it was dark and raining).

So I'm now being VERY careful as to who I ask to look at this gearbox project for me.  :banghead:

If you know of any Pajero/Shogun/CJ3B experts who could help me then I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Next thing to do after I find the part numbers for the inlet needle/jet on the carb (why they didn't replace it when they had the Jeep for a week  gawd only knows)...

Cheers,

Bubba,

I've asked my "man in Japan" and a friend who has an earlier J20 than mine in Bankok.
I'll post back once I hear from them.

Bubba,

That's a kind suggestion.
I'll let you know how I get on getting the parts & diagrams, etc.

Many thanks,
Bernard
