Right then, I know its a Jeep & they all do that etc.... however, after 84K I would like to take out some of the 1950's B movie style steering method from driving the Jeep.
Its got a new damper but it still has a "vague" spot noticeable by a delay in changing direction & wandering on the motorway so I was thinking about a new steering box.
Its a 98 Auto 4.0 if that makes a toss of difference but would appreciate any advice on a replacement, where from, how much, linky's so I cant order the wrong bit & or any other options etc.
Cheers

Its a TJ mon...live with it or test drive a JK and see if they are better......?
Lifted, modded etc ride will go rougher..just use it....

I get the same problem with mine from time to time, but I find a good grease of all the joints in the steering links etc. Soon fixes the problem.
I’ve just checked the supplier section as I recall Shep or Mick O or someone else recommended a reconditioner in and around the Dudley/Wolverhampton area, but for some reason the reference had disappeared. I’ll keep searching though. IIRC the cost was only around £100-£120 for a reconditioned unit.
I found these by googling: http://www.powersteeringonline.co.uk (http://www.powersteeringonline.co.uk)
I’ve just thought! I presume you have adjusted the castor correction cams in the lower control arms?

I'll go through all the basics, sorry if it's all been checked already.
Steering box bolts - tighten f'ing tight
Track bar bolt to axle - as above, check for ovalling of the holes
Track bar bushing - changing to poly helps
Track bar mount on body - tighten
Track bar ball-joint - if worn you need a new track bar
Tie rod ends on ends of the steering linkage Y
If all of the above is spot on and the steering is still vague (even for a Jeep), you may need a new steering box. I had to replace mine on the XJ at 120k miles and it made a big difference. New ones are £££ so I went second hand but there's no point if the donor one has also done 80k miles. The US guys on NAXJA seem to think the wear is normal and replacement at 90-100k miles is to be expected. There are re-build kits for LHD but not for us.

Also if ya lifted has the pinion angle of the diff changed or been corrected?
If ya got a lift the taller springs will have made the diff point a bit more upwards. this will have affected the toe in and camber and ackerman action. Because of this a lift can actually shorten the wheelbase of a TJ cos it pushes the short arms down and therefore closer together.
Quick fix......... adjustable lower arms to restore axle parameters and wheelbase..... Steve at FTE for RE ones which will fit any lift kit.....
