Another lunchtime trawl thro the anorak of my mind......
Comin' down the A1 after the Doncaster bash 1 week ago made me think about more power.........
Been looking for a SBC for a while but most are dogs or junk.... Also best to look for runner in some'at like a Chevy Caprice....dog of a wagon but engine and gearbox there for the taking.
Then I came across these guys http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180471799302&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_6496wt_2793. (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180471799302&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_6496wt_2793.) hope thar works
still more money than I can justify but cheaper than Hesco :icon_biggrin:
They ship to the UK and do a propane friendly version if that's yer bag......
There's also a bloke within 50 miles of me that will build a turn key for you to your spec for the same money.....
at least he's within slapping distance if it all goes tits up:icon_twisted:
-
if that really is a turn key engine then thats not a bad price, have m8s that have paid more for tuned flat 4s crate engines, I agree go local providing he is still using the same or better quility componants, my only worry would be that the UK builder wont have access to as many parts options
-
dont do it! they go too fast make to much power and sound too nice, you wont like it :steeringwheel:
-
on a slight tangent the dodge v10 is a great engine kicking out slightly more torque than bhp which is good for offroading but with a downside of it goes bloody fast as well
In 2003 the capacity was pumped upto 8.3l to give out a very pleasing 500hp and 525lb-ft of torque.
-
They're feckin' huge though.
-
hmmm yep that is the other obvious downside to them, stretched front end on a CJ ?
-
there are other options, personly recon it looks shite but a few of the boys here have their rads in the rear tray with a bunch of electric fans, would give an extra 10" enough for a V10 with a bit of stuffing
-
Few years ago was one in JP ..... Bloke obviously had wedge cos he built from scratch, stretched, but you couldn't spot it all in a CJ7 NV4500 and Atlas and Dana 60.s but running street axle gears and 33s cos he wanted 120mph capability?!
Guy also built powerboats for inland lakes with twin 1000hp V8s..... so plenty of loose change?
Reckon he spent $100K. It was hated by JP readers (Jealousy?)
Anyway it was on e-bay US a few years ago when the dollar was pants for $56k..... So £30k to get it over here..... mmmmmn. another missed opportunity.
Oh yes it had everything front and rear winches and heating and AC by Vintage air...... I was just £30k short at the time :jump_125:
-
i find it very sad that there no ve yj or tjs in the uk or at least i dont think there is i know mad wolfies is chevy blazer hybrid yj but thats it i think
-
Got to agree..... but watch this space........ :icon_twisted:
But at the speed I work don't hold ya breath........
I've been looking for a Caddy 500cid for a few years now but I guess its a big wish as they stopped em in '72, but a runner with a TH400 and its a slam dunk with a Dana 300 and some bits from Advance or Novak...... or me and the torch... forgot that!
So its down to the slow search for a SBC....... but the rest of the rig is ready.... even got the gearbox doing duty behind the 4.0 litre six at the moment (NV3500) Just need a cheap find of a running Caprice wagon or £3k down the back of the sofa! :jump_125:
-
Matty of the muddyjeepers had a 360 engined YJ based on FSJ running gear inc axles and Th400/Quadratrac with a milemarker P/T conv.
Prop angles looked a bit mad as it was SOA converted up front with matching lift at rear.
Had been heavily used on/off road tho, not just some pipe dream. :greggmo:
Also he had a metalic purple CJ5 converted SOA he was sellin, NO WAY was any prop gonna line up at the rear :jpshakehead:
-
rear rad fitments are quite the norm in the buggies used for rally raiding as they are less prone to damage from hard landings (obvious). just the need to uprate the fan as there is little or no forced air flow.
-
Sold my home brew rear bumper swing a way tyre carrier to Matty and was interested for a while about the CJ5... but too much work... The YJ was for sale about a year ago but I think he was asking strong money like £5k (hope he got it) was a nice (unique in this country) vehicle.
-
they were a nice bunch to wheel with

I quite liked the guy, BUT, we couldn't see eye to eye on the CJ5.
Looked good with the paint job + lift, no way could ya get the trans to line up.
He insisted that it would work with a V6 Chevy out of a S10 blazer (errr... rite)
Then I asked if the 232 in it were seized up.
"no it's good" = 3 cylinders full o' water, still wouldn't turn with all 6 plugs out :icon_redface: :icon_redface: :icon_redface:
Still said a grand firm, refused my £800 offer, took 6 months to get it on the 'bay. :017:

I rest my case, both of the shire folk fell into my trap and stupidly showed their interest in male genitalia by using the word knob...... definitely a obsession with other males....... :wave-fingersmiely: :wave-fingersmiely: Ibet they are frequently found in woods aswell getting stuck into things.......
-
Saw an interview with Sheila Handcock a few years ago and she made the comment that the problem with males was too much tossterterone..... oh I'm sorry I meant testosterone........ On second thoughts maybe I was right the first time. :icon_redface: :icon_twisted:

-
Chevy? In a Jeep? Am I missing something? :king:
-
why not
-
Um, no reason.... just a Chevy??? There is a 360 on ebay at the minute....
-
I think it's cos they're cheap and plentiful and the architecture has only recently changed.... so from mid 50's ish to mid 90's I'm sure I read that the SBC is the worlds most produced engine :icon_super: making 150 bhp in a cooking engine up to whatever your budget wants.... but 300 is easy and will outlast most of us!! :icon_twisted:
-
yes we know :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin:
chevys are good strong engines if i get the chance i would fit a 6.2 v8 diesel hives me a hard on just thinkin about it
