Ok, final issue (for now :icon_redface:)...
My airbox doesn't have any hose coming out of it. It just has the rectangular opening, with nothing protecting the air box. Therefore, going through water, it's got massive potential to be a big water scoop.
Does anyone have a cheap way of attaching a hose (which is round) to the rectangular opening, so that I can then route it to the back of the engine bay? Eventually I'd like to fit a snorkle, but as I'm not intending on using the Jeep like a submarine, this isn't an urgent need as yet!

blank the hole up in the front with a sheet of plastic and sealant then drill a hole in the back of the airbox to what ever size pipe you wish to us for an air intake.

It's not until someone posts up a really easy fix like this that you end up thinking to yourself "cr@p, I should have thought of that" :lol_hitting:

Speaking as somebody who recently drowned their Cherokee, I've been looking at making a few modifications to the airbox too. It seems that the factory intake is designed to funnel water right into the engine (which is exactly what happened to me). Does your 96 have an airbox behind the headlight and then a second chamber over the engine? I was lucky in that the water wasn't too deep, but a small bow wave forces water through the grill. The slab fronted design of the XJ doesn't help. As a quick fix out in the field, maybe covering the grill might buy you a little time? Personally, I'm looking at a snorkel..
