Title: Rumble above 90mph
Post by: cliff on April 03, 2010, 12:23:46 AM
I bought my WJ 4.7 Overland a month and 2000 miles ago, my first Jeep and my first 4x4.  So far I love it except:

I get a deep rumbling noise from the front of the car at about 90mph.  Passing 100 it goes away.  The car is stable, no vibration just a noise.

The fuel gauge heads for the zero mark faster than Lewis Hamilton trying to escape the Australian police, but the noise isn't quite the same.

Below 90 the car behaves perfectly.  It is coming up to a 90k service and a fluid change may help.  Also as it is a UK car it may not have been driven much above 90.  (Autobahns are great!)

Any ideas?

PS:  The car will be coming to the UK for a service.  I was quoted 1200 euros for the 90k service at Jeep in Frankfurt!  The reply - usually thieves carry guns or knives - did not go down too well.

Its the vibrations of the vortex in your fuel tank travelling forward through the propshaft tunnel and exits just in front of your LH windscreen wiper. Simpelss... :hysterical:

Nothing to worry about......just keep filling up the tank. :003:

100mph in a Jeep....??

Interesting question

Calais to Frankfurt in an orvis ZJ - cruise set at 100mph - most beautifully stress free journey I have done in a motor, never missed a beat, was like a good night kip

You live in Frankfurt Cliff? Spend our summers, easters (not this one tho, poorly lad) and soon to be every other holiday (flat is getting central heating - at last !!) in Oberrard, love it out there. Forever having the discussion about the mrs getting work in an english curriculum school out there and trying it out for a few years.

Anyway, back to the main point about ya motor, no idea mate, sorry, im the resident tech idiot  :003:

not having a clue this sorta sounds like uneven tyres driving through a fulltime system that sort of speed may be causing some sort of feed back from a viscous coupling or LSD in transfer Case diff devise       i point out i am not at all familiar with the finery's of the wj series and may be blowing out my arse

"I get a deep rumbling noise from the front of the car"

Isn't that why you buy a V8?

what tyres are you using and are they the same on the front axle ?

In the uk it would not be considered a problem since the legal speed limit is 70 mph.

can you fell the vibration through the steering wheel, throttle pedal of floor ?

Possibly a worn bush allowing more input through the suspension into the car at that speed.

bushes aren't rated for speed just for "normal" day to day driving and not the high speed autobahrn.

If it was that fantastic rumble (burble?) then no complaints at all

Pirelli Scorpions all round

I agree, the cruising speed in Europe is higher though.  Even the limited areas are 120 or 130 kph. (75 - 85 mph)

No vibration at all, car is smooth

In Nierstein, close to Mainz.  Next door to a Weingut (wine producer)  :icon_biggrin:

Thanks for all the replies.  Maybe it's my own fault, if i didn't have such a heavy right foot, I wouldn't have noticed.

90+ is cruising.  :greggmo:

Maybe I'll be a little easier with the pedal until the next service.

Found a temporary solution now that it is a bit warmer, leave the sunroof open.  :icon_winkle:
