I know its hard to believe that the paint guru needs to ask this, but I do! Im gonna paint the TJ flares matt black before they go on the CJ, do u reckon I have to bother with a primer (like below), or slap it straight on after a bit of scratching up?

As I recall you need some special flex stuff to bond it also!!!

either by design or accident it looks like BD has found the right stuff, it is an adhesion promoter as well as a primer

this is interesting i worked with an old boy who was a a paint shop bod and he used to paint plastic /rubber arches with out primer
