Title: Acetone as a cleaner
Post by: GREGBLACK on April 08, 2010, 05:32:05 PM
Hi I recently added some acetone 100ml to my fuel tank to clean the injectors the xj wouldn't pull above 2,000rpm, I am now now on my 4th tank with acetone and it it sorted it. Diesel consumption is also better but I suspect this is because the jets are cleaner and it is not a real gain but more like getting back to what it should be doing, consumption was 28.6 and is now 32.1 It will now cruise at a decent speed and hold it on hills.
I would recommend it as an injector cleaner.
Cheers Greg

Nail polish remover has other nasties in it that your engine might not like.
I get acetone from Walmart. They sell it with the paint, but it's cheaper from
the beauty aisle in 1/2 litre bottles.

Tim's right, nail varnish remover of mixed with other oils like sent and moisturiser,

just a quick look came up with this  (http://www.cfsnet.co.uk/acatalog/CFS_Catalogue__Acetone_533.html#aAAC003_2d005) as an idea of price, but my local place is cheaper still

While we're on the subject of disclaimers.......

Acetone or Propanone is a very strong solvent. It will disolve many plastics and rubber conpounds.
It can also dissolve paint, so remember that even pouring it in your tank might ruin your paint job
if you spill it. You may also ruin rubber or plastic in your fuel system. Keep these risks in mind.

Hi  I will continue to use it but only every 4th or 5th tank to keep the system clean, it can take paint off if you spill it  although it did not on mine I wiped it of straight away. My wife says that nail polish remover is 80p for 500ml at the chemist but I  got mine from a paint shop 100%acetone 1000ml £2.30 but the more you buy the cheaper it gets per litre.
cheers greg

Actually i am going to Chernobyl on 1st May , i am meeting my Russian girlfriend in Kiev Ukraine , which is just 75 miles south of Chernobyl...

Last time i went there was not any shops open in Chernobyl , in fact nothing at all open , and very few people , but i shall keep my eyes open for some diesal injector cleaner...

There is quite alot of radioactive material about , would that be any use to put in the fuel tank..?   anyone else tried running their diesal Jeep on nuclear fuel...????

Does it work on petrol engines?  Injector cleaner is expensive here.
