My ABS light has come on & stays on, could this be an expensive problem to fix.

The ABS light on my XJ came on recently. I traced it to a build up of mud on the tone ring. Crawl underneath your Jeep and brush away any crap from the ridged thingy on your brakes.

The way I understand ABS is that tone rings has a series of teeth/ridges and these whizz past a sensor. When you lock the wheels, the sensor gets a constant signal instead of a series of pulses and this triggers the ABS. It could be a sensor that's knackered, but it's well worth having a clean up first.

I had an old citreon bx gti that had abs probs, i found that by taking the bulb out from behind the dash warning, the prob of a naggin fault light instantly went away  :003:

the drive shafts have a castleated ring on them near the hub. a magnetic sensor sits very close to it and that measures the change in magnetic field giving an electrical pulse which is controlled by the ABS ecu. if the sensor gets moved or covered in road grime then the sensing effect can be altered causing the ABS control unit not to register anything and giving a warning light.
Take the wheels off and give the sensor a good clean so removing any of the muck that might be all round it.

this will depend on the MOT tester. he should watch to see the abs light illuminate then go out when the ignition is switched on
