Title: 2002 Cherokee - wheel lock noise + heat issue?
Post by: PEN on April 25, 2010, 10:45:03 AM
Hi all,

I have a

2002 Jeep Cherokee 2.4 petrol sport. Not sure about the way the suffixes work (CJ, TJ etc) so here's the pic

(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh284%2Fmpppen%2Fjeep.jpg&hash=0685836c247bb7d1de281e218c773b9ecc4d6199)

and have a couple of issues which I hope you can help with.

Firstly, When I put full lock on - either left of right and in either forward to reverse I get a loud squeaking/groaning now coming from the wheel area..... any ideas?
Also, after even the shortest of journeys the engine seems to get quite hot and make a sort of quick repetitive pinging noise from underneath the car about half way back - hard to explain but kind of like you hear when water pipes expand.

Sorry I know my explanations are probably as hopeless as my mechanical knowhow but I'd be grateful for any thoughts on it.

Thanks

PEN

The pinging noise is probably just the exhaust and cat conracting as it cools down.

You are running it in 2wd on the road aren't you ?

does the noise happen when you are stationary or only when moving?

the pinging is the catalytic convertor/exhaust cooling down. this is normal and affects alot of modern cars especially if they have been driven fast or for a long time.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, I only run it in 2WD mode unless I'm vaguely offroading.

The wheel noise only happens when I'm moving and usually at slow speed.... does that help the diagnosis?

The cat convert /exhaust sounds about right thinking about it.

Thanks again

Get the bottom ball joints checked. They can let go without warning, there were problems with them on the KJ resulting in a saftey recall.

Thanks.

I'll take it up the garage and they can take a look at them (if the car was never taken in for the recall I guess it's too late now).

Cheers

Saftey recalls run indefinitely

Ok so at the risk of being overly obtuse, can anyone please tell me how I go about checking whether it has been done. I presume it would have been registered with Chrysler Jeep somewhere, any idea where one would start?

Thanks for the help :icon_biggrin:

I think I have a web address on my home computer, although I do recall entering the vin on jeep.com as well.  Will try and remember to get the details if nobody else provides it.

You could always phone the service department of your nearest Jeep dealer and ask them to check the vin.

Great, thanks.

I've checked the VIN and the upper ball joints haven't been done so will get booked in.

Ok almost a result - may have been a bit premature  :icon_rolleyes:

called the Jeep Garage who said that the lower ball joint recall was done on the vehicle and they're still waiting whether the upper ball joint needs doing. it was only given notice on April 7th and only in the US so it's too early to know if it will be rolled out over here.

he suggested removal of an remove an idler pulley and to replace the belt ( <--- means nothing to me) which should help the noise.

gettin' there  :icon_winkle:
