Title: 1996 Grand Cherokee auto probs
Post by: wildwood on April 28, 2010, 05:33:45 PM
Not my week is it? :icon_twisted: I fix one prob on the YJ winch and now got a weird one on the GC.

This is similar to Bunnykins from the beginning of march but more so......

Been fine until this afternoon and 30 miles into journey and accelerated to join dual carriageway and it was as if engine was cutting out and trans shifted down and then almost froze with no power to be had..... lift off and slow increase of power. So do round trip of 70 miles with very light throttle and  although prob there just made it back....not pleasant... Checked fluid and not burnt and topped up with .75 of litre. went out and prob still there....

Being near home did some tests.... put shifter in 2 and boot it ..... goes forward but stutters just like an elex failure to spark plugs
happens in first as well...... back in drive and boot it same deal.....
If you boot it just before Overdrive comes in same thing stutter and you have to lift off, and its happier but prob still there.
If you turn Overdrive off it seems to make problem worse.....

Basically its undrivable as is so need to make some repairs or some'at. :100:
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sounds like an ignition fault

TPS sounds likely IOM ........

Had this on the YJ .....sudden cut of what seems like spark then bang back on song.... felt different in a manual on 35s large amount of drivetrain shunt....

Seems that I've gotta go get those fault codes read.....

Right then read the fault codes (on off on off on ) not with reader....

12.... battery disconnected sometime... (previous owner had fitted new positive battery clamp)

thats all apart from 55 end of codes....

could the others you guys suggested not show up any codes?

For what’s worth, I had a misfire on my 4.0l TJ and I replaced most things on the electrical side. I checked the fault codes with the on-off-on-off trick and it didn’t show up any fault codes. Thinking there might be some hidden codes and not showing, I bought a reader and it too didn’t show up any codes. The misfire was eventually traced to a dodgy plug lead.

So, if you can read the codes with the on-off trick, then don’t bother with a reader!

Well well well...........

Thought it might be TPS as had that before on YJ....... (IOM mentioned it too, so there's 2 of us thinking that!)

Lighthouse not got any and wont be ordering for a while...... but would be £25 for a TPS....

Stealership want £85 + drink for outgoing liar and will have in 2 days

US ebay has one but cant wake the dozy sod to send me shipping cost......

Charlton breakers sent me a complete throttle body with all bits attached £65 + just put it on and been out for 10 miles and up to temp etc and touch wood all seems OK...... So if I am all OK it was the TPS or the IAC or any of the other bollix on the throttle body.....

Hopefully a result........... time will tell.

Thanks  all for your help and suggestions.
