Title: Replacement shock absorbers, which ones?
Post by: sprintagogo on April 30, 2010, 01:54:30 PM
I have been running Pro-comp shocks as they were on the Cherokee when I got it. Because of a panic purchase when Explorer Pro-comp were going bust just as I was about to depart to Ireland for the 3 peaks event I ended up with an odd one on the front and I have just snapped one of the rears so I guess it is time to replace them all.

The obvious choice would be to stick with what I have and get in touch with the UK pro-comp importer (Bearmach?) and see if they are bringing in the shocks I want (or can get them). The problem is I have always thought they ride a bit on the hard side, I don't think this is because of the springs as they flex loads so seem to be quite soft. I used to have Decarbon shocks on my Landrover Defender and they gave a great ride and handling so wonder if they might be a better chioce if they are not too expensive.

Any opinions on this and where I might get them from? I got the Decarbons from Scrapiron as part of a 2" lift kit and Colin is now trading again as Extreme 4x4 and still advertising the Decarbons (lets not start a slanging match about scrapiron, I was always taken care of on price and customer service and the springs they custom made for me were great).

Have to come to the defense of ProComp on CERTAIN of their products.

I replaced my RE Doetchtech or whatever fronts as they burst with some Procomps......

But I anoraked the US parts catalogue and came across 'Customs Applications" for the adjustable MX6 they come in 8" 10" or 12" travel flavours in Soft or medium valving

I got the 12" travel  flavour and the Soft valving.... I run them at their Softest setting ALL the time and they float over speed humps with my 4" leafs like a hovercraft.... still haven't done the back and that crashes over....mmmnn? Worth a look Part No MX6076   (How sad is that I know part nos ... argghhh!)

Of course! I seem to think the procomps are usually around 35-40 moooolars each regardless of shock size. I am guessing and sort of working backwards from my Defender lift kit price that the Decarbons must be around the 40-50 mark? £50 per shock would be my limit.

Yes, The OME shocks are mentioned time and time again on the US forums as a reasonable quality shock that gives a comfortable ride. Does anyone have a clue about prices or a UK supplier that won't want to take an arm and a large part of a leg for a set of 4?

I like what you are saying but if anything it will be the bog standard ES9000's again and live with the crashing over bumps.

don't get the pro comps, not unless you want to be on a list for a spine replacement in a few months

Give Gywn Lewis a call with your specs and im sure he will sort you out? OME for around the £75.00

Next step would be (my choice) FOX

Pro comp...rough country...rancho...they are all the same shock, had used all 3 and the markings on them are all the same. Personally on an XJ I found Rough Country OIL shocks (not the gas ones) the best of the cheap ones, also tried OME and there was nothing in it between them and the RC ones, except better made.

Currently running RC oil shocks on the WJ, nice ride & not crashy

had procomp es9000's and was glad to see the back of them. I have rough country shocks on the xj at the moment. they are alot better then procomp but they were cheap so can't fault there ride is better and not as crashy over the bumps. Looking at swapping them for either dual tube RE dampers depending whats on offer from quadratec. OME dampers don't work with std bar pin eliminators as they are too bigin the eye width
