i have a rattle at the front end i thought was the manifold but now i think its the timing chain. i removed the fan belt and started it up and still got the rattle so im am going to fit a new tensioner in the next couple of weeks.
any hints or tips before i start?
cheers, Paul.

yup do it carefully and fit a chain too

the fat one speaks the truth. we did the one on mine. change the lot mate.

Yeah, changed mine a few months after buying it, suddenly started rattling at tickover speeds very annoying! replaced both sprockets, chain, tensioner, when i stripped it down it was the tensioner that was causing the problem. the chain and sprockets were fine but changed them anyway as i had bought them. if i remember the tensioner metal bracket mount needs the sump lowering to get a spanner on the bolt that holds it in place! so i just swaped the new tensioner shoe, just push out the pin and change over. i put up a pic of the tensioner at the time.... don't pull on the outer edge of the harmonizer as its rubber mounted.....hope this helps........

thanks for the help :icon_biggrin:

will i need any gaskets or special tools like a puller to get any of the belt wheels off?
-
you will need a puller for the bottom pulley (harmonizer) and a gasket for the cover plate..... you will have to remove the radiator to tackle the pulley! not too bad a job, if you change the chain/ sprockets remember to line up the timing marks...........cya

still not done it yet.
i rang up to order the parts and the guy on the line said before i order any parts i should take off the distributer cap and see if there is any delay in the rotor arm moving when turning the crank by hand. i tried that and it seems fine?
when i start the engine from cold it takes about 5 seconds for the rattle to start.
