Title: Directional tyres
Post by: Bulldog67 on June 08, 2010, 08:21:32 PM
two quick questions: got baja claws on the CJ, and a mudzilla as a spare, but they all directional (not my best plan), so if i have to sling the spare on and its the wrong direction how many bad things will happen and how quickly?

secondly, if bad things do happen quickly, any SENSIBLE ideas about where to put a 2nd spare?

1/4 of your Jeep will go backwards.

If you're using it as a spare, then it's just to get you home or to the garage, so it would be ok.

Problem is that you have different tyres that have different rolling radius, which would not be
great for an LSD or locker (if it's got one). On the front it may affect the steering negatively.

However, I much prefer Mike's answer.

Isn't legal action a little harsh, it's only a poor dumb tyre.

always have spare direction set for nearside as statistically tyres nearer the curb are more likely to puncture, but don't panic as it will get you home on either side, you will only notice a difference at high speed or in adverse conditions

on a reversed directional tyre the main differences will be more tyre noise, slightly more wear and a slight drop in water dispersal.

no locker, looked into that but sounded too complicated

If it bothers you just buy a none directional tread spare

A directional tyre mounted the wrong way is an MoT failure and in case of an accident it would be noted that you had a tyre not mounted in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

In the Swedish Army it's considered normal to put the front directional tyres the wrong way.
