Here we go Bubba finallly got the tub off its only taken me 5 months so far!!!
Remember the 28th Feb 2010 Kev :010: :010: :010:

Its new home in a cave West Yorkshire
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi702.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww27%2Fdavethesparky2005%2Fscrambler%2520pics%2FDSC00087.jpg&hash=4228daa62990212140a163e20e58542a396a8727)
stripped down to the bare bones again
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi702.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww27%2Fdavethesparky2005%2Fscrambler%2520pics%2FDSC00650.jpg&hash=f5c6b134e65db6b819ab2a7eee8d74c30437cd2b)
As expected chassis all looks sound Kevin but you didnt tell me about the massive hand made fuel tank thats attached to it, must be 20 gallon or more perhaps i will need it :icon_eek:
Just need to strip whats left on the chassis and get it off to be shot blasted and galvanised and then the rebuild can start properly :steeringwheel:
please notice the torque converter restraining device in the photo!! :icon_biggrin:
-
it was all tank man i thought it was just a cover
hows it all lookin dave
-
looks v complicated :icon_eek:
Im just gonna be buyin a ready made off the shelf CJ8 jobby i reckon, im worn out doin other stuff :015:
But dood, keep the build photos goin :icon_super:
-
looks v complicated :icon_eek:
nothing complicated about pulling something to bits Bulldog its putting the thing back together thats hard :jpshakehead:
Its all looking not too bad at the moment Kev i also thought the fuel tank had a big skid plate on it untill i looked properly and found out it was one massive fuel tank.
Chassis looks to be sound although im going to have to put a couple of holes in the back cross member or remove it all together to get all the years of rust and crap out of the chassis rails plus the zinc will need to get out somewhere as well i suppose :icon_biggrin:
Tub is rotten in a few places extra than you knew about but its all mendable and i havent found anything too serious as yet, presuming she must of been looked after quite well by a previous owner or owners.
Also need to sort out the chassis at the front where someone has cut a slot out to presumably get at the steering box mounting nut thats in the chassis although that part on that side looks like its had a repair at some point in the past as well so dont know whats gone on there anyway!
The next parts of this build are going to involve parting with some money actually thinking about it all parts of a rebuild involve parting with money so the local seal and bearing suppliers and Lighthouse Jeep are going to do ok out of me for a while :icon_rolleyes:
-
i think the slot was so a new box could be fitted
-
Some more photos sorry about the poor quality need some better lighting anyone know a decent sparky???
The worlds largest cj fuel tank, its not handmade although it still looks like it is but i have found a sticker saying Trailblazer inc gas tank division on it so must of been bought in from the States at some point I dont know if the brackets have been welded on by someone to make it fit or if they were always on the tank but it is very poor quality so will be going to the scrappers i think.
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi702.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww27%2Fdavethesparky2005%2Fscrambler%2520pics%2FDSC00671.jpg&hash=ccd707933f0be341da13e4e3363c8ca1e96b5909)
The body tub looks rusty in places but most should save.
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi702.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww27%2Fdavethesparky2005%2Fscrambler%2520pics%2FDSC00662.jpg&hash=9de1a64bb3f363c0a468c41da92d09922ecebd02)
Looks like its had a bump to the back offside corner as there is this repair and the chassis looks to have a bit of twist in it from the fuel tank back
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi702.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww27%2Fdavethesparky2005%2Fscrambler%2520pics%2FDSC00672.jpg&hash=da6c3ed41b3bf93101a2b222e29ca1d2fe7f8882)
Back crossmember thought it might be a rusty mess as it had a load of stainless strapped to it but its actually in very good condition just surface rust.
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi702.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww27%2Fdavethesparky2005%2Fscrambler%2520pics%2FDSC00674.jpg&hash=f1fece63cbe8fcb4154c31bc238178827aecba65)
Stainless stuff that Bubba left strapped to the cj, looks like a proper US jobbie of some sort was installed with all stainless UNC bolts even the 5/8s bolts holding the tow ball are stainless, imagine it must be worth a fair bit in scrap but i think ill put it back on as towing brackets are always handy for recovery purposes and for stopping people "rear ending" you.
Isle of man i await a smutty remark
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi702.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww27%2Fdavethesparky2005%2Fscrambler%2520pics%2FDSC00673.jpg&hash=5760d945ad3b0627a892ea0bbc5be97f991032cc)
-
its a shame you didn't get a pic of the 8 next to the mighty bronco!
the only time you will get rearended by Mr isle of man is if he gets you to bend over and pic his wallet up at cheepfest (sounds like it could take a bit off lifting!) you can always scream "is that Seline Dion over there" and when he lossens his grip run for it.
-
You mean this mighty bronco "on tow" nice wheels by the way :icon_biggrin:
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi702.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww27%2Fdavethesparky2005%2Fscrambler%2520pics%2FDSC00526.jpg&hash=de0d2a9c6483cc22541bbb62cc6faead24c02905)

-
Is that on route to Canal Street????
-
is that c surplus to requirements?
-
Dunno??? Do tell me more....

Mucho Porto has been consumed - this is step #1.
-
im even more confused, I thort tuesday was ya sesson night

Oh dear, think you need a quick history lesson on architecture Bulldog you have obviously never ventured further North than Dartford:
Manchester side of Pennines(Coronation Street side or the left hand side to you)= red brick buildings and mad Mancunians.
Yorkshire side of Pennines(the right hand side)= stone built buildings (as in next to Bronco) and proper folk.
London area(the south)=ramshackle housing built on a swamp by dodgy cockney geezers, immigrants and Southern poofters :greggmo: :icon_biggrin:
-
I just saw summink small and boxy covered in coal dust and made the wrong assumptions :003:
however, red for mancs and yellow for yorkies, think i can remember that
means i learnt 2 things today :icon_super:
-
what a good looking bronco!!

-
what a good looking bronco!!
Tis indeed.
What yr and what's it running??
Back arches look in good order-better than mine anyhows.
Think I'll clag some $hitwackers over them to tidy it.
-
was very solid up to the point i scraped it......seemed a shame but it was shit offroad... managed to sell 351w and the 4" lift it had but the rest got scraped..

Well its taken 10 months and a bit of welding but shes finally made it to the zinc bath, just need my parcel of bits from the states and in another 10 months i might actually have a rolling chassis :greggmo:
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi702.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww27%2Fdavethesparky2005%2FDSC00764.jpg&hash=1aca046e1123c98e68ddf704e0523da7129bb372)

http://www.birtydastards.com/frm/index.php?topic=11938.0 (http://www.birtydastards.com/frm/index.php?topic=11938.0)
-
It wont be shiny for long its going to get painted black with that gate paint that is favoured by the wrought iron people and sticks like crazy to galv, the inside can stay shiny though!.
Incidentally Bubba the chassis was rotten in two places, one was most of the outriggers where the water had collected under the body mounts and the other place was at the back where the second cross member in at the back (would be the bumper on a cj7) goes into the chassis. At that point the cross member must act as a bit of a water/mud trap just in front of the rear shackle mount, it might be worth a tap with the old hammer to check yours out as mine was rotten on one side and starting to go on the other side :icon_winkle:
-
good info dave will check mine maybe flood it with oill from time to time
-
circled the troublesome area was just the underside
(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi702.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww27%2Fdavethesparky2005%2FDSC00764circled.jpg&hash=28a64f5822bd29820910db2e668102338c9c240c)

(https://birtydastards.com/frm/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi702.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fww27%2Fdavethesparky2005%2FDSC00869.jpg&hash=007f2598b257e8b1a3f7e58746e58c78ce697a86)

-
Now then just how much timing chain stretch can i get away with on a 258 engine?

-
Im glad i did, the old 4.2 is desperately in need of a rebuild or is it time for another Toyota Diesel just to annoy you Jeep purists :wave-fingersmiely:
-
dont be such a ghay
an amc V8 is the way
ditch the diesel yota
it aint ever a jeep motor
and that my son is poetry, innit :003:
-
Ill leave the V8s to you Bulldog you have them all anyway :icon_winkle:
4.2 is what she is and will be again after quite a bit of machining and an order from the States at vast expense :010:
-
not got them all now :010:
handed over a 401 this mornin :010:
nice fella tho so it aint all bad, and he may be adding an 8 to his Bulldog Emporium shoppin list as well :greggmo:
-
hmm interesting stuff sparKY engine had a full topend rebuild so the guy it came from reckoned inc a new old stock carb at alegedly huge expense this was the engine that was in my orange scrambler when first bought
-
lateral play on a 4.2 timing chain from set up is 7/8" if that helps
-
Thanks Nosebolt but i think that timing chain has more like 1" 7/8s nothing a new one wont sort out.
hmm interesting stuff sparKY engine had a full topend rebuild so the guy it came from reckoned inc a new old stock carb at alegedly huge expense this was the engine that was in my orange scrambler when first bought
Shame he didnt rebuild the bottom end at the same time then :icon_biggrin:
And does this mean that southern poofter has got old blues good engine in the orange one then :die:
-
no the blue engine was well shot and went to james h years ago as a core for a stroker the engine you have as i say was in the orange jeep when bought and ran really well as suprising as that may sound looking at the chain panic can confirm this as he came to collect it with me from mertha tydvill
so when you bought blue i told you it had a lot of cash spent i was relaying the info i had been given and as i say it drove very well but i changed it for my own rebuilt engine when the tranny seal went
-
yup I can confirm it ran really well,as bubba said
-

someone in Toledo must of liked using the spot welder, it took me 2 hours to drill out 34 spot welds that held the reinforcing for the bulkhead today so we can properly mend the rusty hole that has developed where the accelerator mounts :jpshakehead:

I need a garage that big :icon_eek:
-
Not my garage, its belongs to my friend who is going to patch that tub up. Hence the old VW Beetle in pieces in the background, ideal project for you that BD :003:
-
No project is ideal for me :003:
-
Wonder if you could fit a 401 into a Beetle :017:
-
20 months update rebuild goes on with interior teaser shot :003:
-
Oh and fitted my cupholder
-
Looks v dusty
-
They havent installed that new fangled electric in the North yet to run those Dyson thingymajigs we have to suck that dust up ourselves through a straw or wait for a windy day and push it up to the moors
-
Good build thread sparky :greggmo: how about some more pics, how far off finishing are you :003:
-
It still needs the exterior of the tub along with the wings, bonnet, bulkhead, tailgate, doors and roll bar painting by someone who knows what they are doing.
The dashboard needs to come out again so paint can go behind it and i have one or two wiring issues to sort out at the same time.
Then there is just the small matter of re-assembling it all back together and taking it for an MOT.
Another 24 months should do it :icon_rolleyes:
