Hi Dastards, how do I identify the rear axle fitted to my 2002 cherokee KJ? i've been told it could be a DANA but is most likely a Chrysler 8.1/4? its making some noises and leaking a little oil from the outer bearing seals, so gonna have a bash at overhauling it, (fitting new bearings/ seals/ clutches etc)..... but first i need to know what i'm working with so i can locate some parts.... :017:

:017: hmmm still not sure, coulnd't see the 8.25 listed there.
looked on google images, and found a thread that shows the chrysler axle to have a squared off bottom and the dana to be rounded, then another one says different, i'm gonna try and get the transmission/PR codes from the stealer, and find out for sure so at the mo its 80% chrysler 20% dana.. :017:
And could anyone reccomend a supplier for replacement axle parts, bearings, shims, clutches, oil, addittive and possibly- but hopefully not, crown and pinion!
Or a complete reconditioned axle ????????

If its parts you are after Lighthouse is the place as far as I'm concerned!
But there are lots of places listed on the "Suppliers Thread"

It's a Chrysler 8.25

Yes it is a C8.25 - you can tell because it has a flat edge along the bottom of the diff and the Dana axles are more 'rounded'. 8.25 was the only axle on the KJ as far as I know.

Cheers, yeh looks like its a 8.25, dealer wasnt too helpful, prob because they knew i wouldnt be buying any parts from them.. the plan is to get some oil from local motor factor, whip off the cover, see whats needed then get some prices... and chuck the new oil in till i get the parts sorted out...
