Title: Oil leak, seeminly engine oil...............4.0L TJ Manual tx
Post by: Asylum on August 23, 2010, 10:17:23 PM
Hi all,

I have an Oil leak, seeminly engine oil slowly dripping from the bell housing plate and on the rear face of the oil pan down to the oil drain plug.

Is there an obvious oil seal behind the flywheel that could have gone or am I faceing the likely hood of the following:

REAR MAIN OIL SEALS
The crankshaft rear main bearing oil seal consists
of two half pieces of viton with a single lip that effectively
seals the rear of the crankshaft. Replace the
upper and lower seal halves as a unit to ensure leakfree
operation.

Does that mean both transmission removal and oil pan and rear crankshaft bearing case?

Any help greatfully appreciated and good news even more so.

Cheers Clayt

don't know if its the same as the 4.2 but i did the rear crank seal with the gearbox on, just dropped the sump and the rear seal half casing

Agree with that mate from what you describe...... I got the same :jpshakehead:.... Read in JP (where else :icon_super:) that its a 2 piece seal that you have to drop the sump to get at.... take rear crank cap big end or whatever you want to call it and its a 2 piece unit.... The upper one is taken out by gently using a woodscrew and screwing into seal and then pulling out new one when lubed will slip in.....

As you can tell....... I haven't done it yet :jpshakehead: Will keep putting it off until I endanger the Florida coastline.

i stand to be corrected but think the 4.2 and 4Lt engines use the same rear crank seal, if this the case i have one here you are welcome to for free. it is new and unused, i bought 2 sets when i did the job expecting to mess one up but it went in OK

Cheers for that Nosebolt. I am actually planning to do the seal after cheapfest as I have looked at it and its not loosing hardly anything at the moment so after cheapfest I can get to it. Also not doing it this weekend means both Warthog and I can go help JJ out for a couple of days, so if you wouldnt mind bringing the seal with you to cheapfest that would be great cheers mate?

Will have to trade some beer for it though or it wouldnt feel right!! :icon_jook:

Thanks again
Clayt
