Title: Tranny case skid plate
Post by: gazjeep on September 29, 2010, 07:09:20 AM
OK, numpty question.

If I were to remove this here skid plate on the TJ to accomodate my OCD, other than removing the obvious 6 bolts, does anything i.e. the ransfer case & associated mechanical gubbins need supporting whilst its off ?

Just unbolt, remove, clean, replace, is that it ? Nothing gonna fall off or break on me ?

Bring it on peeps  :003:

Apart from the 6 bolts...
Put jack under SYE or tail of yer 231 and undo the bolts poking thro centre of skid that are trans  support and torque reaction thing and yer good to go..
its quite heavy so bench press away....

Chance to replace rubber gearbox support and stuff with Poly stuff to stop the wobbles......... (from Daystar or the like)
cheers

the way i do it gaz, can be done single handed easy.

remove 4 nuts on  studs recessed in centrish of skid, you may have to dig the mud out

place trolley jack under skid roughly central, remove 6 large bolts

lower jack and wheel skid out to where you going to clean it

put trolley jack under transmission and take weight, careful not to knock those 4 studs that are now exposed

clean skid and 4 studs

remove jack

place skid on jack and raise up centreing it so it goes over the 4 studs, then raise up and insert side bolts

tighten side bolts, remove jack and put back 4 nuts

jobs a good un and dont forget to have a check under whilst its out, good time to check out uj's and transfer case linkage

good luck  :greggmo:

Hhhmmm, had a sneaky feeling that there was gonna be more to it than 6 chunky easy to access bolts  :jpshakehead:

Think I'll stick to the trowel & hose for the short term & then follow MOCAJ's proceedure when I have consulted folk on Saturday to be on the safe side :icon_winkle:

Cheers guys  :icon_winkle:

I will be consulting the proprietor of MJS & MOCAJ on Saturday night (memo to self, take a torch), in an effort to prevent said rusting  :hysterical:

It’s in the jeep self service procedure manual, you should have got a copy with your first set of modification parts.
