Title: 97 XJ Electric Windows
Post by: mr s on October 02, 2010, 01:43:57 PM
Hi All, need to pick your brains.

After much searching I've finally bought myself another Jeep.  Got it from a dealer who I know had had it quite a while so I was able to knock a considerable chunk of cash off.

There were a few niggles that needed sorting out - most of which I've managed quite easily but I'm struggling with this one.  The problem is that the window switches on the passenger doors don't work.  The windows operate fine from the drivers door switches so i know the motors etc are fine.  Leading me to think that the window lock switch on the drivers door panel may be at fault (no matter which position the switch is in they still don't operate).

This morning I decided to have a crack at sorting it but I appear to have run out of talent!  I've managed to remove the door card & then the control panel from it, then taken the control panel apart to have a look at the switch & can find nothing obviously wrong with it.

Has anyone heard of this problem before?  Any help would be much appreciated!!

Check for broken wires in the driver door wiring harness.

I've not checked the passenger side door as yet (i assume you mean the front one).  If this were unplugged would it affect the rear doors as well?  :017:

I've just started checking the drivers door harness for damage, as yet i've not found anything but i'll keep looking.  I'll whiz the passenger door apart whilst i'm there just in case.

Cheers for the replies so far!

It comes up regularly on the US forum as a common fault. Take a look at this - www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/fixing-97-window-lock-switch-dummies-459934 (http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/fixing-97-window-lock-switch-dummies-459934)

That looks like a nice easy fix, though my windows have mysteriously started to work again as of today  :banghead:  Though i did take the actual switch to bits & coat it in switch cleaner.

I'm sure it won't be long till the give up again, at which point I'll give that fix a go.  Thanks muchly for the link!

Exactly the same thing has happened to my 97 XJ of late and whilst it's currently working I'm leaving it be for the meantime.  No doubt I'll have to conduct some maintenance at some point soon along with my fair weather dipped beams too.
