Title: WJ Quardra drive axle problems
Post by: scrw on October 21, 2010, 02:56:53 PM
Just had some fitted from a breakers (low milage & with warranty), and if feels like the diffs are locking up when driving in a straight line over 40mph, jeep gets very unstable, mainly the front diff from the feel.
They have the right oil & friction modifier in the diffs, the tyres on each axle have the same tread (rear tyres slightly more tread than front though) and low speed turns on tarmac aren't shown any signs of the diffs locking up, nice and smooth without noise or jerkyness.

Any suggestions peeps?

Nasty thought just popped in my head, wonder if they have sent out a 3.55 front & a 3.73 geared rear axle  :017:

Wonder if the warranty will cover the damaged transfer case?

looking at the tags on the axles, front is asking for 75w140 oil (as a quadradrive should) the rear is asking for 80w90, ie an open diff & most likely a 3.55

anyone know where I can check the axle ids, I have taken them off the axles & are with me now.

And am I being unreasonable for asking for money back from the breakers? Just wasted £200 in labour having these fitted

1.I would have thought any good garage would have checked the  axles had the same ratio
2. I would be straight back to the breakers to get a free replacement or my money back.

rear axle is a 52099429ac which says 3.73 open d44a

problem is I can't find the front, 52111063ac, also I thought all varilocs were 3.73, so if there is a ratio mis-match WTF is the front axle??

oh more good news, managed to read the axle ratio from the front plate, its 3.91, is that tha ratio for a diesel axle?

Seems that 3.91 was a ratio available for 1999-2001, which would line up with 3.1TD engine production.

Thinking about it (and running it through a gear calculator) if I get another 3.91 to go on the rear I can run 265-75-16 tyres and be pretty much the same as stock rmp to mph speed. Shame I just bought some 245-75-16 tyres  :icon_rolleyes:

okay, makes sense, lets see if they have a rear to match
