Title: Wading/Breather Kit - 1996 XJ 4.0 Petrol
Post by: snoopyjon on October 27, 2010, 02:03:27 PM
Not done any serious wading yet, and as I put on my snorkel thread, I don't intend on using the Jeep as a submarine, but I hear lots of people going on about wading kits/breather kits...  Do I need these on my Jeep, and if so, where can I get them from, and where do I fit them to??

Sorry for yet more luddite questions!

Cheers,

Jon.

From what I recall, you should already have breathers that come to the top of the engine bay - or is that
not high enough  :icon_eek:

If that's the case, that's plenty high enough for me! :D  Is there any way I can check?  Don't really want to trash my diffs/axels...

Cheers,

Jon.

There's a thin rubber pipe coming from the top of each diff, you just need to trace them back.

There's a thin rubber pipe coming from the top of each diff, you just need to trace them back.

The pipe from the back axle should come from the T-junction where the brake lines bolt to the axle. I extended mine to the roof line but then I do have history on submarining exploits. The front axle one is prone to damage or coming out of the diff as it is just a push fit plastic connector. There is also a breather on the transfer box which can be found on the passenger side near the top and also a breather on the auto box which was murder to find/extend until I removed the auto box for another reason. You might be able to get to the auto box breather if you undid the cross member and lowered the box a few inches otherwise you probably wont even be able to feel it.

I extended the 3 front ones right up to the underside of the bonnet then ended them inside an upturned plastic drinks bottle so I probably gained 6 inches in height but also they would have to suck in more than a litre of air before water entered the breather pipes.

Thanks for the info guys, I shall get underneath on Saturday and have a look.

MOT tomorrow, fingers crossed she's going to pass, as after all the work I've done to her in the past few weeks I want to get out and play now!!  :icon_super:

Cheers,

Jon.
