hi,ive just bought a 2002 cherokee 2.4 petrol,after a few days i noticed it was leaking oil on the drive ,had a quick peek underneath and found it was coming from the front diff where the prop fixes only problem was the prop is not there ,never owned a jeep before and i know i should have checked :icon_redface:,what i want to know is will it cause any damage plus where can i get one from ,also wondering why it was removed in the first place ,any info much appreciated

can think of a few reasons, most to hide something so not good news, could be a fault in front axle (oil leak may be part of it) may be issues with transfer box or could have just been a duff UJ in old prop getting noisy, either way you need to do some investigating

my bet is shagged pinion bearings and prop was took of the hide the whering

Won't harm the transfer box, but sounds like you've been had. Where did you get it from?

Sorry to say but if its been removed its not going to be good news.
Obviously done for a reason, where did you get it from, private sale or dealer ?

you have rights evan if private it has to be fit for purpose if dealer insist they put it right

i bought it of a private seller and i assume they will just fob me off if i go back ,cant seem to trust anyone these days ,i wanted a 4 by 4 and bought a turkey,any how where can i get a new prop from and are they all the same for this model,the car drives fine and i can select 2wd,4 wd plus low 4wd no probs and there are no noises from the diff,transfer box are there any other checks i can do also the jeep has done 64000 mls

Well I would at least try & get hold of the seller just to get hold of the prop. Then you can address whatever has gone pear shaped with the diff.
Where abaouts are you ?

front diff may not make a noise if not under power so cant eliminate that yet, diff cover off for a visual check wont do any harm and you get a oil change in the deal

with luck its just the seal get under the front of the truck and where the oil is dripping and grasp firmly the the flange [spinny bit] that the prop fits to and try to move up and down or side to side if there is movement you need new bearings and seal
as gaz says try and contact the twat that sold it and at least try and get the prop but a used replacement should not be hard to find

It has to be for a 2.4 petrol model. 3.7 and diesels are different. Unfortunately, they're quite scarce.

cheers fo all the replies ill have a look tomorow,i am in harwood near bolton if anyone is local they are most welcome to have a look,to be honest i am realy hacked off,the car is great and i was lookin forward to tryin it off road,i have seen a prop on ebay for £300 but im reluctant to shell out incase there are more problems,one thing i wont do is try and sell it as is to another unsuspecting mug(ones bad enough)it just dont seem right

£300 sounds a lot, you can get one made for around that price

£300 was for a fully recon one ,i do agree though it is alot of money,
if i have to replace the bearings or oil seal in the diff is it a diy job ,also where is best for parts
i am also thinking the rear exhaust looks ropey and i cant seem to find one listed on ebay anyone know a supplier
i was hoping to carry on restoring my reliant scimitar over winter ,looks like the cherokee has other ideas :icon_rolleyes:

Sadly 300 quid looks pretty reasonable for the front prop on a KJ. Even at dirt cheap Rockauto they're
$350 - $400 plus delivery for a remanufactured one.

cheers for all the help,ill have a look at the items above only problem is i will have to pay a surcharge as i have no prop to exchange,ive also ordered a new oil seal for the front diff(where prop attatches)is this easy to fit,ive also noticed i am only gettin about 22mpg is this about right for a 2.4 petrol and could having no front prop affect mpg,i also went to jeep to enquire about the prop and they wanted £400 plus vat :icon_eek: the chap at jeep did say that the front prop on my model cherokee was a common failure point so fingers crossed thats all thats wrong with it

Cheaper one seems thats all you will pay as he says you get 25 back after you send your old one so then it would be 100 instead i think anyway

ive enquired about the prop for the 3.7 litre car,can any one confirm if it definately wont fit as its only £100,ive also got a new oil seal for the front diff is this an easy job to fit,also will my jeep have a cambelt(2.4 petrol)plus at the mo im only gettin about 18 mpg any advice to improve appreciated,cheers jon

You have a timing belt, yes. The part number for a 2.4 manual front prop shaft is 52111594AA, but for a 3.7 auto it is 52111597AA.

thanks for info on timing belt,when is best to change it ,jeep has done 64,000 mls ,just looked in manual and it says 120,000 mls between changes so should i leave it alone

There's no reason why you can't if you'd rather, but it doesn't need to be done until 120000 if the manual says that.

cheers for the info on the timing belt,i went to a jeep dealer today and he said that 60,000mls was when the timing belt should be changed,he also wanted £500 to do the job,any thoughts appreciated,i think that the manual is right and he just want my money,on another note i have now got the oil seal for the front diff,any info on fitting most helpfull,cheers jon
