Title: help pls..no clue whats going on with mental car???????
Post by: mipple on November 12, 2010, 08:27:44 PM
ok where do i start???
I have no clue what im doing with cars but will try to understand all the "talk" and pass this info on to try and get me back on the road.
First of all for the past 12 months the left indicator on my jeep grand cherokee 2.7 02 year, wouldnt work, it would if i flshed my lights at first but then that stopped and i had to turn the hazard lights on to get the indicator to work..due to lack of funds iv just had to carry on and make it work that way!
Yesterday i got in the car and turned it on, the first thing i noticed was the engine light came on, "panick struck" as iv already had to have new fuel pumps and a  new ecu unit. All the other lights were on and wouldnt go off, i drove the car and i noticed that the gagues werent working and the petrol said i had none with the light being on...however the computer was still on and said i had 109 miles left in my tank. When i got home i tried to put the front passenger side window up and it wouldnt work, the rear left hand side either, but the right hand side of the cars windows would work?"!?!  I turned the engine off and then restarted it the gagues were still not working but the car cut out after 5 seconds, i re started the car and the same thing happened but i noticed that the computer had gone off and now said _ _ _ miles left in the tank and the miles until next service was also blank. I turned the car off and now it wont start, it triews to but wont actually start, also the key fob wont open or close the doors but the key does the job by using it manually.....
I am just so worried, like most people i am totally skint to be polite and when i spoke to the main dealer they siad im looking at least £250 for the diagnosis... Please someone tell me that there may be a minor problem and an easy solution ??? let me guess though your going to either say youve never heard of anything like it and you all think its a gonner???
thank you hayley!

First things first, where abouts are you ?

Sounds like its gone beyond the usual Jeep reset but it wont hurt to disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes, then reconnect & see if this clears any faults.

Wait for Mike Pavlin to see your post & he'll give the best advice.

BTW, dont forget to say hi in introductions, always helps  :icon_biggrin:

Welcome to Birty's

Sounds disturbingly like a problem I had - dead cell in the battery. When you don't have enough volts,
the computer and gauges go nuts. Just a possibility. Put a meter on the battery, should read 12v or more.

Hi Hayley,

Sorry to hear that ye old GC 2.7 CRD is giving you such a head ache.  How many miles has the truck done.  Not that that matters but just out of curiosity.

I've had one for nearly four years now and apart from the usual (injector, gearbox computer update) I has not missed a beat.  Oooops forgot to say that it is going to the Jeep Garage tomorrow (in limp home mode) to sort an uncooperative brakelight switch  :icon_redface:

I find it hard to believe that a hook-up to the dealer computer is £250,-  That must be BS.  When my gearbox needed an update they hooked it up and downloaded new software + coffee & carwash for £ 35'ish.

As for fuel gauge/overhead computer I wouldn't worry too much.  Every time my fuel gauge approaches 1/4 tank it goes haywire. One moment it can be ok and when I start next it shows completely empty with 0 miles to go on the computer.  I know I can do 380 miles easy on a full tank so with a mileage reset at every fuel stop I'm not to bothered.

Hope that Dr Mike can chime in with some solutions for ya.

Cheers.

Hi dutch,
i think were on about 85k miles by now, are you in birmingham too? what garage do you go to? the one i go to is not far from barnt green, was literally  2 mins away when i first bought the car but they obviously knew id bought one and moved lol how rude!!
The computer thing normally goes a bit nuts i have 44 miles of diesel left then all of a sudden i have 0 which iv got used to but this time it doesnt say any mileage just dashes were the numbers were and the miles till service has done the same, no noise to tell me i need one, no numbers showing to say how many miles left just dashe like this..... _ _ _ miles til service.
Weve taken the battery off and its going to be charged all day maybe night today, do i just get someone else to attach their battery to my car and see if it sorts itself out? if it suddenly is revived i take it that i need a new battery?? ANy ideas if i need to take another mortgage out like normal??
I cant believe what bad luck i have had with this car i really cant, from tyre nearly falling off, fuel pump/injectors breaking, heating concking out, window breaking and having to be taped up (yes tramp i know but stoney broke means no choice) to the left indicator working only when the hazards are flashed a few times first, then he died totally and the ecu had to be replaced...now this..its always when im going on holiday or taking the kids somewhere aswell inconveniently!!
I def need doctor mike your all talking about surely for such a man with said reputation he should have a bleeper on him at all times like a & e lol
I really hope someone can help!

Hi;
For the moment keep your purse closed; its really easy to rack up big bills with Jeeps especially when main dealers are involved; but theres always a slightly cheaper way of fixing them; but may take a couple of days extra & get creative.
Grand Cherokees do seem quite 'fragile' so its especially the case; but for example the heater blowers in mine stopped working, 30mins on the internet & I'd found the cause & part ordered from ebay US. 5 days later, 20mins with the screwdrive & £100 and all done; I dread to think what the numpties at the Daimler dealer wouldve charged.
I'm hoping your prob may just be battery related; they go crazy when the battery is on its way out.
If you haven't got a multimeter etc, do you have breakdown cover with homestart; they can diagnose somthing simple like the battery?

For SAS jeeps look on Facebook. Not used them myself.

ive had a few probs with my jeep cherokee since i bought it ,like no front propshaft fitted so no 4wd,and only gettin about 12mpg at the mo so i know what u are goin through,i bought a code reader for 25 quid of fleabay (obd11 code reader i think) ,dead easy to use and its highlighted where my problems regarding mpg issues are ,you can then ask here on the forum for help like i did and you will have the fault codes, hope it is just your battery, cheers jon

To display fault codes :

Turn ingnition key 5 x on and of in very quick succession.

With the amount of problems you are experiencing keep pen and paper ready.

The fault codes will be displayed one after another in the digital odometer display.

Either list them here or have a look on : http://wjjeeps.com/faultcodes.htm (http://wjjeeps.com/faultcodes.htm)

P0340 on a diesel could be cam or crank sensor or circuit failure. It may be worth disconnecting both of these and seeing if everything else comes back tio life (it still wont run) as failed sensors have been known to cause the data bus to shut down blocking all the computers and generally causing havoc.
Title: Re: help pls..no clue whats going on with mental car???????
Post by: mipple on November 13, 2010, 07:58:24 PM
thanks mike,
any ideas where that is?? im a stupid girl who knows nothing but ill have ago!! also will the engine not run due to the key fault you think? iv tried both keys now, the spare wont do anything either, you think it needs to go to jeep main dealer?

Title: Re: help pls..no clue whats going on with mental car???????
Post by: Mike Pavelin on November 13, 2010, 08:05:50 PM
From the symptoms, the key problem is a symptom of a general data bus failure caused by something else. From memory, the cam sensor is half way along the cam cover on the drivers side and the crank sensor is just above the starter motor on the engine block.
Title: Re: help pls..no clue whats going on with mental car???????
Post by: mipple on November 13, 2010, 08:56:35 PM
What is actually stopping the car from starting, is that because of the key error, do you think it's the actual key or where the key actually goes? I'm preserving it does have to go to jeep for that??
Thanks h x

If the cam or crank sensor fails completely the engine will not run. Obviously a key error will also stop the engine running, but with all the other symptoms, there is clearly something disrupting the data bus, which could cause the key error as the SKIS immobiliser system relies on the bus to transmit data to and fronm several locations in order to work. Unfortunately modern cars have very complex electrical systems in which one seemingly insignificant component can wipe out most of the electrical system. To be honest, your best bet might be a local auto electrical specialist on this one.
