Title: detroit locker removal ?????? need quick answers please ;) UPDATE/PIC
Post by: gramps99 on November 13, 2010, 01:53:55 AM
OK, i have found a nice lifted jeep Cherokee, year 2000 4.0

i will be honest and say i really wont be using it offroad, i just like the look of lifted vehicles  :icon_redface:

anyhow this vehicle has been offered to me and i have to make my mind up sharpish. the thing that is putting me off is that it has Detroit lockers in both axles, and reading up they aren't the best things in the wet and snow (remember i wont be offroading so really no need for them ) so to my questions, how much would it cost to put the jeep axles back to standard ? would there be much interest in the Detroit lockers if i was to sell them (the vehicle has never been used offroad, and was modified around 2 years ago with current genuine mileage around 35k so they wont have seen much use or abuse ? i don't really want to start spending more money on the vehicle, the ideal solution would be if the Detroit's would sell for the price of new bits to return the jeep to standard and even better if the buyer could remove/swap them over (guess i am asking a lot but i honestly don't know much about them or their worth, ) so if anybody could give me an idea that would be great as i don't want to miss out, or, buy the vehicle and find i need to spend loads on it either.  :017:

thanks in advance  Rich

Firstly, make sure they are lockers or are they limited slip diffs.

See here for lockers, http://www.4wd.com/search.aspx?SH=QT1kZXRyb2l0IGxvY2tlcn5CPWRldHJvaXQgbG9ja2VyfkQ9OX5JPVByaWNlfks9NH5MPTF_TT01fg&SI=1672f8b8-dcb0-42f7-b43a-15d865c771a4&LAP=0&Action=2&AnswerID=1311 (http://www.4wd.com/search.aspx?SH=QT1kZXRyb2l0IGxvY2tlcn5CPWRldHJvaXQgbG9ja2VyfkQ9OX5JPVByaWNlfks9NH5MPTF_TT01fg&SI=1672f8b8-dcb0-42f7-b43a-15d865c771a4&LAP=0&Action=2&AnswerID=1311)

They retail at about $600 each plus shipping plus VAT & duty so they are not cheap.

Personally I would buy it, drive it & then worry about a swap to standard later if you really dont like the drive but frankly most people would love that set up.

Check out Lighthouse in Norfolk for the cost of new standard parts. Remember though, the parts you have are not new & then there is the labour to do the swap to consider.
I can reccomend MJS (V8 Bubba) on this forum to do the work, you wont find cheaper & he has all the equipment to do the job, I know as he did the reverse to our truck  :icon_winkle:

i think as gaz says are they detroit lockers or detroit true trac if they are true trac the road manners will be unafected and bad weather snow will enhanced  if they are full on detriot lockers you will sell them on very easily you need to know what you have first

Drive it as it is, Detroit Lockers can be a bit harsh but they're not too bad on the longer wheelbase mosels. Worst ways you may want to remove the front one as you won't really be able to drive on the street in full time 4WD. To replace with new parts you could be looking £5-600 per axle and it's a skilled job. If they are Detroit True-Tracs it should be ok. Simply swapping for a pair of used axles will probably not be an option as the ones fitted have probably been regeared for big tyres (another thing to check)

They should be OK in 2wd on the road, you will not tell.

Fantastic & Modified 2000 Model Jeep Cherokee – Only 34,700mls from new !

This is an extremely sad & reluctant sale of my much loved ‘top of the range’ Jeep Cherokee Orvis. I can honestly say that the only reason it is up for sale is that, with the pressures of both work & family commitments, I just don’t have the time to enjoy it to its full potential as I had originally hoped. Unlike some sellers on ebay & for your peace of mind, I will be totally honest in both it’s brief history & description…

When 1st registered, the Jeep was initially used, in standard format, as a demonstration model. It has since had 2 private owners from new & finally myself. The retired gentleman I was lucky enough to buy it from earlier this year was a very wealthy man. Within the grounds of his property, he had a huge barn filled with several historical cars – must have been thousands of pounds worth! Being a 4x4 fanatic, it was this previous owner (who owned it for 6 years) who spent a small fortune on all of the modifications you see on the Jeep today. As the Jeep was one of several cars within his private collection, it had never actually been used off road & had very little use on road. In fact it spent a lot of time in dry storage (hence the very low mileage). Eventually when he did decide to sell it, I was lucky enough to be the next owner.

As you can see by the pics, this is no ordinary Jeep. The modifications were  installed professionally, approx 2 years ago. The result is the ability for improved off road performance with minimal effect to on road driving. Although it has never been off road, this Jeep will perform superbly off road & also happily cruise on the motorway at 70-80 mph all day long. The jeep also has the huge benefit of having only done 34,000 mls from new. Everything works perfectly & I would not hesitate driving anywhere within Europe in complete confidence that it would not let me down (unlike many other 4x4’s !).

Being the ‘Orvis’ model, this Jeep was ‘top of the range’ when manufactured. Further details of the jeep are listed below, starting with some of the standard fitments & followed by the modifications (most of which are fairly new):-

Superb & powerful ‘bullet proof’ 4.0 engine (the Jeep is both quick of the mark & cruises very well)
Only 34,000mls from new supported with service history / previous MOT’s (last major service recently completed in August 2010)

Excellent body & paintwork (polishes up really nice)
Selectable 2wd or permanent 4wd ( high & low ratio )
Unmarked full leather charcoal interior with nice wood affect trim
Fully adjustable electric front seats (both passenger & drivers)
Electric windows (front & rear)
Adjustable steering column
Power steering
Cruise control
Heated wing mirrors
Air conditioning
Dash mounted CD changer
Electric ariel
On board computer
Remote control central locking
Factory fitted alarm/immobiliser
Heavy duty rear load liner
 Roof rails

Supplied with a highlift jack
Full 5” suspension lift kit ( manufactured by Rusty's - a proper American kit )
33 x12.5 x15” BFG mud terrain tyres fitted to steel wheels (full set of 5)
Wheel arch extension kit kit (to accommodate the larger tyres)
Detroit lockers (front & rear)
‘Quick release’ front anti roll bar (can be disconnected to improve articulation when driving in extreme conditions off road)
Heavy duty front winch bumper
‘Warn 9500i’ winch (with remote control) – supplied with all operating instructions & manual
Heavy duty rear bumper (with fitted tow bar)
Heavy duty under body protection (underbelly skid plate & rear tank guard)
Stainless steel performance exhaust system (sounds awesome & gives approx an additional 10-15 bhp)
Fully waxoyled & under sealed throughout (to keep the underside all in ‘tip top’ condition)
The Jeep is MOT’d until mid July 2011 & taxed until end January 2011. It had a major service in August this year during which all oils etc. were fully replaced. The new owner will be very lucky & not have to spend any money on the Jeep until the next service is due. To be very, very fussy, the only item the new owner may wish to address at some time in the future is the warn winch. As with the other modifications, this was fitted brand new 2 years ago – it does work, but can be a little tempramental, mainly due to not ever having been used!

I have all the original owner’s handbooks & associated documents etc. The Jeep will also be supplied with 2 sets of keys. In summary, this is a very nice truck that gets a lot of attention wherever you go. As mentioned before, it has never been off road, despite all the modifications. I have used it as my 2nd car since ownership, mainly for weekend use & the occasional trip to work. My kids love it & it brings a huge smile to my face when ever I jump in. The only reason I have decided to sell is because I can’t justify keeping it along with the other cars we have in the family. Also with 3 young children I just don’t get any spare time to take it off road & enjoy it to its full potential as I originally hoped to.

Winter is soon approaching, so if your looking for a brilliant, superb, well kept, un-abused & reliable 4x4, than look no further !! This beast will get you anywhere- in style, safety & comfort !!

I'm 99.999% sure that it has Detroit Truetrac limited slip diff in front and rear axles. It looks very much like one I drove with a few times about 6 years ago in Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire  greenlanes - I think the owner was called Gareth and the work was done by Mud Island 4x4 before it closed.

It will be fine to drive on the road - probably more grip than you will ever need.

Also, I have a proper 'full' detroit locker in the rear of my XJ and a Truetrac in the fron and have doen 20k road miles in all conditions no problem.

thanks for the replies,  :icon_biggrin: interesting if it was the same vehicle as the mods were apparantely carried out around 2 years ago according to the advert ?

so no opinions on the vehicle anybody ? i would guess you couldnt build one the same with a low mileage vehicle as a base for the same money (£3600) ? if i was to buy it i may even sell the front bumper and winch to recoup a few pennys as its a bit large and parking is somewhat tight where i live  :lol_hitting:

It's a £1500 Jeep but I estimate you would pay at least £5K for all the parts new for the mods.

If it was Gareths, then the build quality should be good (he built mine with the help of Cain).

I know they had a problem with the Mud Island welding, but that was rectified.

Thanks Mike - I just went on colour and it being an Orvis and late model (99/00 ish) - I know that bumper wasn't on the one I went out with a few times.

I would say it's a pretty good XJ - lots of £££ in mods if you were to do it yourself and low miles means there should be less problems with maintenance issues and general wear and tear
