my mate wants to scrap his standard yj dana 30/35 axles on his 1993 yj and replace them with dana 44's can you please let us know of what year / model donor motor we need to do this or are there other options available like toyota axles ????
cheers .....kev......

FSJ Wagoneer axles from early 80's with left side drop same spring perch distance WMS and stronger tubes........
Dana 60 Ford F250 front (has left side drop) with rear matching Dana 60 ..........much much more work....
Sadly both fronts very rare in UK.......... been looking for 4 years .......gave up..... now Gone 60 (Chev right hand drop) and 14 bolt
-
cheers what about dana 44, and what donor motor has them ....kev....
-
Fronteras have a 44 rear, and pre 95 ones have leaves. 95 onwards got coils.
As for a front 44, only what fj said - FSJs. Some TJs had 44 fronts (Rubicon models).
Various US Dodge and Ford trucks had a 44 front.
-
Fronteras although dana are not the same!!!!
-
what about later grand Cherokee would they not fit what axles are on the GC ....kev.....
-
GC Dana is a hybrid and has C-clip axles.............I know cos I stripped one for the disc brake conversion to a Dana 44
There a member on here 'Cleggy' I think.........that has Nissan Patrol axles on his TJ come with lockers and are stronger than 44s
One of the Dutch that used to come to Tong had 'em as well and they stood the abuse of 38s

How strong to do you want?
I recently purchase a king pin (passenger pumpkin) dana 70 front and a dana 80 rear I believe the guy had some more sets available - cheap beef at £700gpb a set with 5.13 gears and 35 spline shafts - foooooking huge though would need 40"+ tyres for them.
Want me to find the details?
-
what size tyres/rims do you intend to fit as this could be a deciding point on what sort of axle you might need to look for
-
running 35'' BFG muds tyres just sick of breaking little dana 35 need a bit more strength ........kev........
-
All UK TJs have 44s on the rear.
-
I've run 35s on rocks and stuff for the last 4 years no issue with the Dana 44........ but you can pony up for Warn shafts if you need
The front Dana 30 just needs either Warn or Superior inners and outers....... again no issue for 4 years until this year when I removed steering stops for tighter turning and gave it the beans under throttle with full lock........ and then only UJ not shaft damage.... unlike crown parts that I have grenaded inner and outer and UJ doing this..........

ooooh

A Chrysler 8.25 axle as fitted to most 2.5 petrol XJs will stand up to 35s if you fit a full locker (ARB, Detroit etc.) and 29 spline alloy shafts. I suspect it will handle more than 35s if driven carefully, it has twice the material and beef of a Dana 35 as I found out when swapping one into my XJ and broke a toe :icon_redface:

are we related?
