I've followed the instructions in the manual for switching off the seat belt warning chime but without success. Has anyone managed to get this procedure to work?
-
You probably can't on a European model. Of course you could always wear the seat belt :jpshakehead:

I don't know if the switch works in a similar way to the TJ, but you could try unplugging the connector going to the seat belt switch in the seat belt socket. That's the way to stop it in the TJ, it breaks the circuit, which is what happens when the seat belt is clipped in place. If disconnecting it doesn't stop it shorting the wires in the connector to permanently connect the wires should do it.

I'm sorry, but I can't see the connection between wanting to turn the chime off and not wearing the seat belt. I can think of a number of situations where the chime is a pain and which don't involve driving unsafely or illegally without a seat belt. Obviously you can't.

Thanks for this suggestion. Funnily enough I had another try at following the instructions in the handbook this evening and this time it seems to have worked. But if the chime returns again tomorrow then I'll have a look at whether the wiring can be easily disconnected.

Hard to beat the Irish screwdriver, eh Bulldog67!

Wouldn't disconnecting the sensor disable the pre-tensioner?

Looking further into it. I can find no reference to whether the seat belt tensioner is affected by the seat belt being plugged in or disconnected. However disconnecting the seat belt switch or not fastening seat belt does affect the inflation of the airbag. Best to hope the owners manual method works or fasten the seat belt before turning on the ignition to silence the chimes.

why not just sit over the belt? its what a lot of truckers do.

It's not that I want to drive my Jeep without using the seat belts, it's just that there some things that require the ignition to be switched on and fiddling with the seat belts to kill the chime is a pain. For example, removing the radio recently in my auto Jeep to fit an iPod adapter required the gear selector to be in drive to give enough room to access the radio and the space behind and below it. This required the ignition to be on and this of course set off the seat belt chime. Similarly, sometimes when reversing it is much more convenient (and legal too) to be able to remove the belt, which of course sets off that bloody chime. The solution in the handbook worked yesterday evening but then when I started the Jeep up this morning and reversed out of my garage without the belt, off went the chime again!
I'll give it a try again over the weekend but was just curious to see if anyone else had tried the instructions in the handbook and got them to work.

FWIW I've got no chime in the KJ 2.5 CRD. Whether that's factory issue or disabeled by previous owner I don't know.
-
Be careful messing with the wiring. The seatbelt fastener switches are connected to the airbag control module.

Well, I tried the hand book instructions again this morning before heading to work and this time they seem to have worked OK - I got the single chime when I switched the car off that confirmed that the reprogramming had worked so hopefully the chime will now stay off.
But the points about messing around with disconnecting cables are well made - who knows what else is affected when you disconnect some safety related item. And on that point, there is a cable trailing under the front passenger seat that is clearly disconnected from something, so I must check that out at the weekend.

I also followed the instructions in the manual, and mine do not chime, i was told by Jeep Privilege Day boys it's for when ya do's off roading, we were at an old quarry near Peterborough and had a really good day, didn't even cost us nowt. :icon_biggrin:
