Title: Fan Trouble

Evening all,

I have been speaking to the current owner of what is soon to be my Jeep and he has told me that the electric cooling fan is only kicking in once the temperature gauge is almost up to the red line.

Has anyone else encountered this problem or has anyone got any ideas as to what could be causing this?

two fans, ones viscous and the other is electric which is mainly controlled by the aircon side of things but will run when the temprature inceases significantly. the viscous fan should lock between 100 and 105 (correct me if wrong) and create alot more flow through the rad. these viscous coupling can fail and yours might have failed if the fan is comming on when the needle is in the red.

Electric fan should come on full-time when the temp gets to around 105. Mine does and brings the heat down quite quickly.

If the rest of the cooling system is working it shouldn't get to 105 very often - my has done it offroad a few times and after offroading and having filled the rad with mud.

Cheers for the info guys. From what he said it sounds like neither fan is kicking in, it has been sat for a while so I am thinking that prehaps the bimetalic strips have corroded on the main fan stopping it from coming on as normal and making the electric fan kick in at 105.

UPDATE:

Right scrap my last message. The main fan is working fine the electric fan is kicking in at high temps and the coolant levels are full. The radiator is heating up as normal but the engine is still running hot under normal driving conditions. Any ideas?

water pump on the way out? or flow restriction somewhere in the engine?

Viscous coupling on the mechanical fan my be broken or going
Water pump going, gone etc.
dirty rad - if used offroad it will be dirty. If you can remove and soak in a bath it will get clean and make a world of difference (maybe worth getting the wife out the house for a bit!)

Cheers for the info guys. He has now admitted defeat and is going to take her into a garage, I will let you know what they say however.
