a few days ago on my way to work,a 15 mins journey,i noticed the tepm gauge start to rise up to 100c for the first time in 6 years,its a facellift 2,5td cherokee on a 98 plate in the uk,she warms up in 10mins and it always one mark below the 100 on the temp gauge,.
but a few mornings ago it was minus 20c,freezing,she has plenty of anti freeze,but i am told this is only good down to around -15c to -18c....so anyway she overheated,
my fan turns all the time,i noticed that the air blowing back from the fan hits the top pipe and thermostat,could d the supper cold air hiting the top pipe area have frozen the stat and pipe,the air temp hiting this must have been well below minus 20c,she has been fine since though my heating is not very good now.

Maybe the thermostat was shut for a little longer than normal, but I wouldn't worry about 100C. That's still some way off boiling in a pressurised system with coolant. Gauges are typically set (or at least used to be) so that the needles point to close to straight up under normal operating conditions.

she peaked at around 120c then shortly after i parked her up and let off the pressure from the expansion tank.
i am certain this was caused by the super cooled air hitting that top hose and stat housing.going to do something today to deflect the cold air flow from the pipe and stat,but one to watch for i reckon.
can you get anti freeze that does down to around -25 plus

Normal full strength antifreeze should do at least -30C.

Normal anti freeze is good for -37°C at a 50/50 mix.

Over in Poland we use anti freeze thats good down to minus 40 , and we put it in neat , no dilution...
It might help to remove the plastic shroud that goes around the fan and directs the cold air towards the water pipes...I took mine off as it made it difficult to get at stuff , i don,t think it serves any real purpose as regards cooling , its just to stop you sticking your fingers in the fan...
Since throwing mine away the tempreture has not increased at all...

The shroud ensures the fan is pulling air through the whole surface area of the radiator for maximum cooling efficiency. Removing it is suicidal for the VM owner.

I have been keeping an eye on the tempreture since i removed it , and even before the cold weather it did not alter at all....
i was not worried about it before....but i am now....

Mike is right, mine ZJ came without the shroud, cos the previous removed it, it would over heat in the blink of an eye :banghead:
I got an xj leccy fan and fashioned so braketry up, fitted a switch and relay :003:

I guess i will be keeping a close eye on the tempreture then...its not a problem at the moment , as its quite cold over here , and will be untill about March....
As i say , i took this shroud off while the weather was quite warm , and it made no difference to the tempreture at all , but i shall keep an eye on it...
