This may well be a little info is a dangerous thing, but having read about 30 JP mags (thanks Wildwood) in the last month or so there is a consistent and strong slagging off for the CJ7 power steering set up, which it would appear is made of egg shell!
So, I know Nosey & Sparks had issues here, so im wondering whether its worth changing when the CJ goes to live with MJS in the spring or is this just a problem (takin aside those 2 birties) for US jeepers that think they drive mountain goats?
As far as I can tell, if I were to change then I need heavy duty steering box mount and replacement (borgeson) steering shaft, and ideally (& this shud be a piece of piss to find) a steering box from a 70's Camaro! The CJ dropped pitman bolts right up to it.
Waddya reckon? Waddya thorts? Waddya advise?
I got a few months to shop before it goes to Bubba. If it makes any difference ( :102: ) it will be changing to the narrow track dana 44's, the 401, and 35 muds (even if it dont make any difference I do like saying all that :003: )
Note: For those that love my journey so much they feel compelled to mock the route, please be aware that I know I dont need to worry and change it on a CJ that has lived in the garage for the last 2 yrs :sign0023: but as its going to MJS im confident that will be changing

never heard that the box is weak, have heard the area of the chassis it mounts to is prone to fatigue, yellas box replacement was due to a worn seal (30 yr old seal by the way) and Tonka has a brace on it to spread the load with the opposite chassis leg.
-
nowt wrong with the box its the thing its mounted to....
My box was mounted to the original early 70s cast bracket which due to the 33s and Tong woods is the reason why it broke, the later cj ones look a bit stronger but i hear they are not brilliant.
You need someone to make you a stronger bracket and as Nosebolt says a tie bar and unless your cj is a left hand drive one then dont try and buy one from the states because it wont fit!
If i make a bracket for the scrambler would you like me to get you a lump of metal laser profiled as well you would need to get a decent welder to glue it together for you though, but its not going to be for a little while yet i have more pressing rebuilding to do.

quite possible cheers dave, I will check with Pa and see what he says, got a good few months anyway

not expensive, start under $50 (http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.aspx?partID=11811)

It will be by the time hes realised it wont fit his rhd motor and he has to cut it up and reweld and repowdercoat it :ecomcity:
-
was sure his was a left hooker

sorry mate it might be LHD but it would seem that only bulldog would know seeing as he is the only one who has ever seen this mythical beast
-
All jeeps steering systems were bought in from GM lock stock and barrel.
GM Saginaw don't seem to have a rep for weakness, if the CJ box aint powerful enough for 44s go for the HD J20 sized GM box.
Chassis/mounts will need mucho beefing up
Don't fuck about with souped up versions of the standard box for mega $$$$$$$$$$$, bigger is better for a lot less $

im RHD
