Title: Project Leviathan starts.
Post by: Norm on January 07, 2011, 10:53:23 PM
Finally got round to it,and decided to ship J20 off to get bodywork sorted. I only have compound atm so working out in this weather is horrible.  :jpshakehead: Goes in Monday, lots to do but guy is happy its all doable at the price we agreed. Think engine is a dud,but will pull that apart myself and see if its worth rebuilding. Hope BD is still buying up FSJ's for spares. :icon_winkle: Hopefully get some pictures of it at its temp home next week.

Had motor compression tested by bloke who deals with american cars, said it was well down, obviously I'm not that green and will inspect it myself as I'm not sure he hasnt an ulterior motive after he offered money for engine after test ?? Sorry BD but garage that is doing bodywork has said that they will string me up from the nearest  tree if I paint it matt black, lol.  :003: May stick with the orange.

The bloke doing the repairs is Landrover restorer  :jpshakehead:,what a waste of talent, lol. I like the G4 shade but told him under no circumstances is he to use that. :headhack:. So either side of that shade should be about right. BD why has it got a Range Rover tank in it ? :078: Tub is made of plate just shy of 2mm thick,so he has had very little heat distortion.Arches have to come out over 4 inches to cover rubber,so its going to look a bit stepside.

The rhino is and acquired taste  :003:

So in which case it will have to be a razor grill instead:

have a look here for the grills:

Errr...........sorry guys didn't intend to stir anything up here, Norm's truck is looking like it will be the Mutts Nuts, but I wouldn't like to be picking up the bodyshop bill myself :icon_eek:

main prob with this thread is that it's gettin hold of my sensible head and is stuffin it in a box and then buryin v v deep, and then my not sensible head is thinkin that i def need bigger axles and bigger tyres :100:
Title: Re: Project Leviathan starts.
Post by: ferretjuggler on February 06, 2011, 12:45:22 PM
Have you tried living with big lift/big tyres on a vehicle which stays on tarmac 99% of the time.

You might look like the mutts nuts but you could feel like a chump trying to look uber-cool while you cope with sqirrelly handling, death wobble, ineffective brakes and a rock hard ride :017:

I'm not going past 35s on a road vehilce, probably 33s actually.
Anything bigger is for off road specials as far as I'm concerned.
Title: Re: Project Leviathan starts.

ya gotta go 35's on a Chief Steve

and fortunately my wallet restricts my idiocy  :003:
Title: Re: Project Leviathan starts.
Post by: ferretjuggler on February 06, 2011, 01:16:08 PM
I got a 4" lift with a set of 33/1250 A/Ts on nice shiney ally wheels, and a 6" lift to fit if the 4" aint high enough.

Looks macho enough for me as is, I'll try a set of 35s when it's on the road and settled in, but TBH I'd expect handling issues to start past 33"
Title: Re: Project Leviathan starts.
Post by: Bulldog67 on February 06, 2011, 01:41:57 PM
the dood i bought the 6" lift put it down to 4" for better road manners as its a daily driver, which he says it categorically has, but, he also regrets it and if hadnt sold it to me would be puttin it back on

Bit of a long shot, but does anyone have a pic of floor pan of J20 ? Does it have ribs or pressed sections ? Its got so many dodgy welded plates on it that none of original is left and restorer wants to get it back to some where near what it should be. Any help would be appreciated. :icon_winkle:

Had me worried there  BD. :icon_eek:. Looks like its had a knock to drivers side wing/bonnet area, either that or it was practice vehicle for catty factory. Where seat belts optional on these trucks ? just that its got some badly welded nuts  holding seat belts in.  :jpshakehead:

Catty, body filler, must be a Northernism, lol. Chassis rails are true so its no biggy. Saw a LR 110 that he sprayed, looks ace so just need  to pick a loud shade of orange for it. :icon_super: Must admit I like the modern grille's over the Rhino or razer tbh. :icon_redface:.Chassis rails are being shot blasted and painted, then back of cab and front of tub will be sprayed so he can put them back together,as you can see from photos it takes up a lot of floor space. :greggmo:.

Only got surround BD,nothing in the middle. Its not in re-useable condition anyway as tabs are all broken. Re-wire simply because its been butchered over the years and dont want to chance a fire after it gets all shinny  :icon_winkle:. He's taking a grinder to front valence over weekend and will be going down to mock up a few bumper ideas with him. This makes blowing out front arches easier and also gets rid of shit load of rot all in one go. :098:

Floor looked like a sheet of plywood with all its repairs, lol. Its getting there, advised him to start putting some metal back into it before cab is in scrap bin. Once doors are repaired they will be lined up and temp welded into aperture so he can remove screen pillars and fold some new ones. Think its had some military/fire/rescue service or something as there is round holes all over the place that have been filled in with bodyfiller. must be ariel holes and plugs for electrics. :017:

He runs a business ,mainly LRs but branching out into proper trucks now that hes seen the light.  :icon_winkle:. The J20 has actually drawn a lot of attention locally so its helping him attract more business which is good. The screen pillars are obviously going to be same outside shape but hes going to try and simplify design as they are just water traps with having about 5 different sections all spot welded together. :jpshakehead:. Mines a spare time filler thats how I'm getting work done cheap, but it suits me as I'm in no rush and the garage I rent is not high enough to get it in or I would be doing it myself. Should have more pics at weekend if I get welding done on XJ. :greggmo:
