Title: thinking of changeing engine to diesel or lpg plz any ideas
Post by: 72 watch on January 12, 2011, 08:18:47 AM
hi birtys   i have a wrangler jeep 1993 2.5 petrol. im thinking of putting a diesel engine in.but dont know what engine is the more straight forward to fit.what will need the least modifications.     any ideas.   or fit a gas conversion. if gas conversion has anyone got one fitted if so is the mpg better and is there much problems with it.also is there anyone got 1 forsale or who can put me in the right direction for one.  as my jeep has only done 30miles to £20.00. and engine has been rebuilt and had a good service. plugs were light brown so not rich .but tyres were under deflated

Bubba had a CJ with a Daihatsu 2.8 turbo diesel conversion which Greggmo now has, although not sure how much difference there would be between the CJ and YJ electrics wise but Fourtraks are easy to find cheap whole as they suffer terrible with the old tin worm.I found one for Greggmo for about £100 i thinkwhen he was after a gearbox or something like that.Easier to buy the whole car then you can take what you need, then sell anything thats left

That's less than 10 MPG by my calculation.

FFS my V8 J series can beat that even with a dodgy carb on it :greggmo:

I'd have thought 20 MPG would be more like it.

to be honest once i get my head round it, if propshafts and stuff av to be changed. just to find what my main probs will be i could achieve it.  ive got a rangerover bobtail which had a v8 in i took that out and fitted a 200tdi disco engine only thing i had to do to get it to fit was reweld the engine mountains and put pedals in as it was auto.took me 3months .  but with the wrangler i dont know what probs i will have so if i could speak to someone whos done it then at least i know what im up against.who would be the best person to speak to mike.regards paul

If you've got a Wrangler then why not use the 2.5l diesel that came out in the Cherokee/Wrangler, it should almost be a direct swap except for the electrics side of things, if there are not many in the UK try Ireland as there are heaps over here.

some one on ebay a few weeks ago tried to sell a part converted wrangler with the 2.5 diesel lump. don't think anyone took it on as its not as simple as you think and the other bit is the engine is a pile of crap and you only gain a few mpg so not worth the hassle

way too much hassle to be effective, plus the engine is prone to failure

Oh well, I'll keep my mouth shut in future, then again I'm not a fan of the old diesel, maybe if they run F1 on diesel I might start to pay attention
